Which will work better?

Just curious on this, I just got a BC246T, I really like the way it is set up.

I normally run a BCT8 in the mobile, with an exterior antenna.
If I hook up the 246T to the same exterior antenna in the mobile, In your opinions, how would it perform compared to the BCT8?

Do you think it would recieve things better, or do the handhelds generally not work as well as the bigger ones?

Every radio has its own performance envelope in which it works. That is, however, subject to external influences such as the type of antenna connected to it and the quality of the coax.
