Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you

If you are using the Whistler cable, download and run the CDM20830_Setup.exe cable driver installer. WS1040/WS1065 Scanner Firmware Updates and Downloads If using another cable, go to the Scanner tab in ARC500 and click on Install USB Driver. Make sure you are plugged into the PC/IF jack on the scanner and not the headphone jack. If the cable has a mono adapter on the end, remove it. The WS1065 requires a stereo plug.

Make sure the cable is fully seated into the PC/IF jack on the scanner. Sometimes, there is a tight fit. What message do you get when you try to upload to the scanner?

I tried and the cable is definitely fully seated, on the upload, laptop the progress bar goes to full but it doesn't change anything and no messages on scanner. On Download nothing happens

Do you have a mono or stereo plug on the cable? If the progress bar works normally, you have communication with the cable. Make sure you are not plugged into the headphone jack. The PC/IF jack is directly below the volume/squelch knobs and above the headphone jack. Is the scanner turned on? You should see the percentage of the file transferred on the scanner display while uploading.

I believe it's a stereo cable as it has two black rings not 1 (?) . I am certainly plugged into the PC/IF but no message shows on screen and the progress bar doesn't move

You upload to and download from the scanner. If nothing is in the scanner, there will be nothing showing in ARC500 when you download from it. If you are trying to load a file into the scanner, you Upload to Scanner.

I have already got scannable objects in the scanner but when I press to download it doesn't start - that's the issue it just hangs around at an empty bar

With the cable plugged into your computer, look in your Windows Device Manager and be sure the computer has assigned a valid COM port to the cable and is not showing any errors there.

Good! That means you haven't lost the scanner's CPU firmware. With no scanner connected, click on Upload to Scanner and see what happens.
The progress bar goes along at normal speed and then finishes even with no scanner connected

That acts exactly the same way with my scanners. ARC500 shows the progress bar with no scanner attached while uploading. There is no activity when downloading unless a scanner is attached. If you get the progress bar when uploading, there is no communication problem with the driver. When I click on Download from Scanner with a scanner attached, my scanner transfers and the progress bar works normally. Did you purchase the scanner and cable new or used. I am beginning to believe there may be a problem with the scanner or cable. It is acting as if there is no scanner attached when downloading.

Both used, with your advice I am probably going to try a new cable and I'm sure you'd agree on that but it's confusing it still connects and shows COM despite not working
