It could be the scanner or cable. There have been reports of the port being bad on the scanner. A broken wire in the cable would probably be more likely.

Do you have a file in ARC500 for what is in the scanner? If so, try uploading the file to the scanner and see if it works. It will erase anything currently in the scanner. You should see the percentage of the file transferred on the scanner display while uploading.

I have attempted - it did not show anything on the scanner display but I also got a warning of PSR 310/410 detected - this data cannot be uploaded to the scanner. the progress bar completed but nothing changed or uploaded

Let me do some checking. There is a possibility that someone somehow loaded the wrong firmware into the scanner. Even worse, the PSR-410 looks pretty much identical to the WS1065. Someone could have switched faceplates with the scanners or changed the model number on the faceplate. The PSR-410 is analog only. Take a look at this link: PSR-410 - The RadioReference Wiki Here is the link to the WS1065: WS1065 - The RadioReference Wiki Take a close look at the model number labels.

I see what you mean about the faceplates. This unit still has the model sticker on the back and did come with the original manual though, so maybe just a firmware thing?

Download the Butel ARC310 software (for the PSR 310/410 scanners) for a free trial period and see if that communicates with the scanner.... If that does work, then someone did indeed swap the inner boards or the faceplate on your scanner with a PSR410.

Try fxdscon's suggestion first. If that doesn't work, try this: Close the ARC500 and ARC310 apps. Click on the following link: WS1040/WS1065 Scanner Firmware Updates and Downloads Download the CPUUpdater_1040_U2.9.exe. Turn off the WS1065. While holding the PROG button, turn on the scanner. That will place it in firmware upgrade mode. Connect your computer and scanner with the cable and run the updater. That should load the latest WS1065 firmware. The 1040 and 1065 use the same firmware.

ARC310 wouldn't read or upload data either - and it is in update mode but when i test it says it couldn't connect to scanner. All this comning together makes me think it could be the cable

Try reloading the firmware. Follow the instructions in my previous post #29. A bad cable will not give a wrong model indication. The cable must be communicating since it detected the wrong model. It may be possible that someone somehow managed to load the wrong firmware. The structure of the PSR-410 and WS1065 is similar. Both are object-oriented scanners using 20 scan lists. Both are based on the same GRE design.

Remove the covers from the scanner and check the circuit boards for any indication of a model number. The problems with the scanner may be why the seller decided to get rid of it.

I have tried with software - it could not make a connection to the scanner even in software upgrade mode. In the screen it shows application version 2.9 same as the upgrader so seems ok firmware wise. it's confusing definately.

If the firmware shows version 2.9, that is the latest version for the 1065. That would indicate you have a 1065 and not a 410. If you cannot transfer files, it seems that either the cable or the PC/IF port is bad. You have communication with the cable. I would suspect a broken wire in the cable rather than a defective port.
