• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Would writing new firmware to the radio overcome the inhibit?

Thats a good question. From what other people have said, Anything below XL you just need to blow in a new per file. For the XL by writing new FW to the radio, I wouldn't know. I dont have an XL or a way to inhibit a radio to check.

No, nothing can uninhibit the radio, thats the point of it being inhibited, so it's not usable...

What if you were to set a password and set the radio to erase on X failed password attempts, and force that erasure?
That would probably work if the radio wasn’t playing dead… you can’t get to a password screen to not enter a password correctly when inhibited. The puTTY method is the most likely, but the commands (if they exist at all) are not readily available public knowledge, so it’s once again security through obscurity if this is even an option…

Most things Harris are very tightly locked down, even getting a legitimate copy from a dealer proves to be tricky for some people. But I can't say I blame Harris. You don't see people adding every single feature to Harris radios and selling them on ebay.

Thats true. However, I understand there are some groups out in the wild that can add features to a Harris radio. Not sure on how true this is, but it has been put out there in the forums. One thing I do like about Harris is what you said. You dont see them on ebay, with whored out feature strings (FC) like Motorola. I do know that RPM 1 and a version of 2 have been "cracked". I was shocked to hear that being Harris is good at staying locked down.

This was common with the P7100/7200 series and was done by means of swapping board chips. All the newer radios have features determined by feature strings that are directly tied to the serial number. If you input a feature string to a radio with an incompatible serial number, the radio pretty much locks up and throws an error code.
