Thank you... I tried the free version first to test and it definitely requires a helper app on my PC. The paid version you mention you have also states it requires the helper app be installed on the PC as well.

What it says and what it does is 2 different things. In settings you can connect to a internet stream and it works fine

Ok thanks... The free version has the same option so I will try that when I get home and see if it is good enough without having to buy the full app. I don;t mind the ads.

Thanks, Noaim! Installed VLC Streamer (free version) to my iPad and I'm able to stream directly from the scanner. No computer or helper app needed. Awesome stuff.

No problem man. I know that it talks all about being a companion app and it is however the name still is vlc streamer which doesn't necessarily mean pc streamer :)

If you find otherwise, you may hate this fact.. .the RFC calls for a very large range :/

RTP: UDP ports 16384-32767

..meaning if I am wrong in that the higher ports are OUTBOUND from your scanner TO The Internet, you would have to open a hell of a lot of ports... which may not work.

Exactly. I have plenty of other programs using ports in that range, which means if I forward them to my scanner, those programs will cease to function (and my scanner will get really confused by, for example, Dropbox and Steam data). (and for what it's worth, my successful rtsp instances have used ports from 49xxx-62xxx, outside the above range too)

UPMan: Is remote connection even supported at this stage? I've got my ports opened/forwarded as necessary - at least, I think as necessary - and when I try to make an rtsp connection over remote (from outside my own wireless network), both with VLC and with other rtsp players, the reply to almost every RTSP command is "RTSP/1.0 400 Bad Request". Thus the connection does not take place.

Internal (to my own wifi network) connections work fine.

I tried doing a DMZ port forward, meaning the scanner is hanging out on The Internet on its own, no FW... and it did not connect... I must have been doing something wrong or the Apple Airport is not doing proper DMZ ...

UPMAN: I'm Still Having Problems with my install. A fellow member offered to lend a hand as he did his own install with no problems. Within a minute it was confirmed that the dongle is dead. (Thanks for your help Tom).....I need to know instructions about sending back dongle for a replacement as warranty is running out

My BCD-536 has been streaming for a few days now. the length of delay doesn't seem to have changed. this is fine for around the house. I am far more interested in remote control and monitoring from anywhere. I am really looking forward to that!

I was able to get everything to work on my PC but I am having a problem with my Kindle fire. I installed the VLC app with no issue but I can't get it to stream in AP mode. It says I am connected under wireless but I have an X through the wireless symbol. Not sure why. Should I be using open or wpa?

It all depends what mode your Wi-Fi Dongle on the radio is set to.

If in AP mode, your Kindle Fire must connect directly to the dongle on the Wi-Fi SSID it created.

If in Infrastructure mode, you must connect the Kindle Fire to your home network or the same network the dongle connected to.

Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) makes use of TCP/UDP 554, and a few others, like UDP 5004, and 5005. The server side (scanner) may set up the stream on other ports, though. I haven't put a sniffer on my network yet, so I'm not sure what's in use.

I noticed that the VLC I put on my fire keeps putting "http://" infront of the rtsp. Could that be why it will not connect?

I think that could be the problem. VLC and the Uniden dongle need the RTSP transport layer and not HTTP.
I know there is a way to use VLC on a PC and re-stream the RTSP/RTP data back out via HTTP and then the VLC you put on your Fire may work but I know doing that does add more delay plus you need to connect with VLS from a PC first before you can re-stream the audio back out over HTTP.
Somewhere, there is a thread or info in an existing thread that explained in detail how to setup VLC on a PC so it re-streamed thee RTSP audio.
Using that method, you would then make a connection to your PC instead of the dongle.

I'm not real familiar with the Kindle Fire but does it run Windows programs?
If so, Bob, the author of ProScan, released an early version of an RTSP/RTP streaming application that runs nicely on a PC.
It does not have all the bells and whistles that VLC has like neat eye candy spectrum scopes for the audio and such but it works and it works very well for streaming the audio.
When you start Bob's RTSP application, it shows you the ports that are used between it and the dongle which makes opening up and forwarding ports to your dongle very easy for those that wish to stream when away from their local network.
It's a very handy and simple RTSP/RTP streaming app that Bob put together.

Is there perhaps another version of VLC that you can install on the Fire?

I know there were more than over version for Android or iOS where one version worked well but the other did not.

Sorry I don't know more about the fire but based on other replies I saw, it looks like it can be made to work.
