In my own opinion, I think the New Media is the biggest problem with these fires, they report that tomorrow or the next two days are going to be high fire danger. So what happens some fire bugs get out and start fires, it could be as dry today and they say tomorrow is fire danger, no fires today but the next day 100 fires all over. Fire fighters are being badly injured.. the news needs to reconise this and shut up.

my 2 cents

never thought of it that way..... firebugs are a problem on a some of these; I think carelessness is the biggest cause, though.

Good point about the media, but that information is available easily to anyone wanting it from sources other than the media. Someone wanting to start fires is going to recognize those days anyway, whether they see it on the media or not, with higher winds, low humidity, higher temps, etc.

Personally I think the media reporting those higher risk days probably does more good than harm since people will tend to be more careful and be on the lookout for fires starting and get them reported quicker. I know I pay much more attention in my area on the days with higher risks.

Just my opinion... :)

FWIW, I tend to agree with OkRob... I believe that the number of fires/injuries/deaths prevented by the media advising people who might not otherwise know that they need to be more careful than normal far outweighs any increase seen in fires/injuries/deaths caused by "sparkies" who were reaffirmed that conditions were ripe in the process. :)

I'm with OkRob on this issue as well. The public awareness and constant reminder to the sheeple out there about the fire conditions probably does more good than harm. The arsonists out there are going to do whatever it is they do regardless of what's on the news.

The news media coveres these fires more than likely don't satisfy the arsonist since they most times the arsonist themselves are somewhere close by watching these fires. News media can cause problems at times to a degree you are right in that (ex. Story about carjacking almost bet in a couple days of the story airing there will be a car jacking somewhere around the area.) I took a pretty interesting class at OSU on this in my Criminal Justice Degree. I think for the most part though arsonist are a different bread of cat that starts these fires espically the ones around the metro hear hope they catch them soon.
