Service Pack Failed to install

Just tried to Install Service Pack 1 for the fourth time, this time I tried to install the service pack 1 in (SAFE MODE) but again it failed to install again

UNSPECIFIED ERROR
ERROR E_FAIL (0X8004005

While it may not be relevant to your issue, just in case make sure you're running the SP1 installer as Administrator (not just logged in as an administrator, actually "Run as Administrator").

Also, check free space on your disk. It's a huge update, that'll expand to a local folder as part of the install, so you want upwards of 2Gig free.

Thanks for the suggestion Brad but I just tried it and it also failed to install the Service Pack Again, I have tried SIX Times now with no luck.

I just install service pack 1 and everything went fine. It finished installing in an hour or less.

I have already downloaded it to my computer !

After hitting retry about a dozen times, I finally got past the 18% and am now on SP1. I decided to just be hard-headed about it and keep trying till it worked.

I've installed it about 5 times so far without any issues. Have you tried disabling or uninstalling your AV software first? Might also want to to try using CCleaner to do a quick cleanup and registry scan before the install.

Thanks Mike I did all of those things and more, I have tried to install The Service Pack 1 Twelve (12) times now and have had no luck at all, the only thing I can think of doing now is to re-format my harddrive and re-install my Operating System and then re-install All my programs. It's A job that will take a good day so I don't have the time right now to do it so I will put it off for several days.

I found the below. You probably have something more wrong with your PC that not able to install SP1. I would, if I were in your situation, backup my data and reinstall Win7. As soon you are done with the install and drivers, I would do SP1 then any other updates. I would hold off any AV software install until your done with SP1 an updates.

Yep I agree with you, I will be re-installing Windows 7 and reformatting my harddrive again from scratch to fix the problem.

Also remember to keep auto update on, for those that didn't the SP1 update is like 800mb where as those that did regularly update only have about 80mb to download.

A little too late now but words of wisdom here from Astrak, most of Win7 SP1 is updates that have already been released and as such people who have kept up on the updates have very little to download and install. I took care of it yesterday on mine, just a few minutes involved.

A little too late now but words of wisdom here from Astrak, most of Win7 SP1 is updates that have already been released and as such people who have kept up on the updates have very little to download and install. I took care of it yesterday on mine, just a few minutes involved.

Small world huh, I guess it would be exact then. Didn't connect the two screen names, until just now.

Seems like you're set on reformatting, a pretty drastic move. Do you have a Windows 7 disk and key? If so try reinstalling it over itself, you'd lose personalize settings but keep your documents, photo's whatever. There may be a repair selection on the disk as well.

I have the Windows 7 disk and it's key, when I get some time I will do it.

You said you have Microsoft Security Essentials, are the definitions up to date? I run that too and updated it before running the SP1 update. When I did my update I did not turn off Microsoft Security Essentials and didn't have any problems.

You should make an image once you have Win7 installed and SP1 installed. I would suggest Drive Image XL (Free) or Macrium Reflect (not free but I used it and bought the 3 license version). That way, if something ever happens again, you can just reimage and it will take only about 15 mins or so to have your PC back to where you want it. I used Macrium Reflect to make an entire image of the domain controller at home and my PC (would do the wife's but she has too much crap on her laptop and I just save everything to the server) every other day saving 3 image versions each.
