You said you have Microsoft Security Essentials, are the definitions up to date? I run that too and updated it before running the SP1 update. When I did my update I did not turn off Microsoft Security Essentials and didn't have any problems.
.

I suggested that he disable or uninstall his AV because there have been issues with service packs for XP and Vista. Wasn;t sure if it was the same with Win7 SP1. I have McAfee on 1 PC and the Microsoft Security Essentials on the other ones I installed SP1 on; neither AV had issues with the install.

Found Problem With service pack 1

Well I finally got Service pack 1 to install after all the problems, this is what I had to do.

  1. Use my Windows 7 Home Premium x64 disk and re-install Windows 7
  2. After the re-install Windows told me NET FRAME VERSION 4 NEEDS to be repaired so I let Windows repair Net Frame
  3. After the install I had almost 70 updates that Windows wanted to install so I went ahead and let Windows 7 Download and install all updates, all updates installed ok. After the computer re-booted I checked Windows updates and the Service Pack 1 was the only update left to install so I let Windows 7 Install it
  4. After the Service Pack 1 was Downloaded and installed Windows 7 confirmed that the Service Pack 1 Was installed ok
I hope the information will be of help to others

Glad you got it working. You didn't need to install any updates other than the mentioned .Net Framework 4.

I updated all 70 updates Windows Update found

I understand, a lot of programs suggest you turn off any running anti-virus programs during an update download and install, however I have never had such a message concerning Microsoft Security Essentials when using Windows Update, as such I have never turned it off during an update nor have I ever had a problem with an update not working properly because of not turning it off. I can only imagine since Microsoft Security Essentials is a Microsoft product Windows updates recognize it as a friendly program.

Steve, curious here, did you do the reformat or just a repair/reinstall over the system as I suggested? When I had XP I had run the reinstall over the system without a reformat a couple of times and that fixed any corruption. I had XP from when it first came out up until when Windows 7 came out, never did the Vista stage. Over time and lots of installs and uninstalls of programs things can get a tad corrupted. So far (fingers crossed) no problems with Windows 7..

I just did a re-install over the Windows 7 I had on the computer so I did not have to re-install all my programs, If that did not work then I was going to re-format my hard drive and re-install Windows 7 and all my personal programs from scratch.

Also I did run repair from the Windows 7 disk once before to fix the problems but that did not fix the problem, the re-install did fix everything.

I installed it on my wife's laptop (Inspiron 1420). She had recently bought two of those Insignia keychains that can show pictures. The keychain worked fine before SP1. It wouldn't work after SP1. I even uninstalled, then did a System Restore to before the SP was even installed and it STILL would not work! Needless to say, the wife's not to happy about it. Oh well.......

I just hooked it up to 7 box (no SP) and copied the pictures over. SP1 does SOMETHING screwy.....but, then again, these digital keychains use the CDFS for some strange reason.

I had tried 7 times to run download the update, got to 58% everytime and then the red screen came up saying SP1 failed to install. Clicked on some MS FixIt program and it bumped along for about ten minutes, said it resolved two problems. Tried the update download again and Viola! got it downloaded and installed. Couldn't tell you what the FixIt program fixed cause it went away after the mandatory reboot. Might be a fix for some who don't want to reformat or re-install.
