I am not sure if these questions are appropriate for this thread, but I thought I would ask since the Wisconsin State Patrol has been discussed here.

1) Does anyone know if the Wisconsin State Patrol uses a 4G cellphone amplifier in their squads? If so, what brand and what type of antenna? I heard Wilson is pretty good. Where is best place for mounting the external NMO antenna? Trunk or roof?

.

The "4G" antenna is for their X10DR, well one of them anyway.

Heard a brief key up but no audio on 23526? Or 23826 off of the Hillsdale Tower last night.

Its 23526 and I heard audio. Sounded like a PD maybe. Heard it last Friday but didn't catch the tower I was on.

At the PD chiefs meeting today they said WSP is now OFF of wiscom. Anybody else heard this.

In the sense that they are not using it for dispatching, yes. However Wausau is still patching to TG 144 as they have been for the entire time, even when everyone else disappeared.

However, they have not completely abandoned the system and will use it for communications with other agencies when needed. Especially those that are using it full time.

TG 77 popped up again. DCI was one of the units talking on it affiliating on the Lampson tower. The other unit ID started with 300, 330, or 303.;

TG 3006 had the most amount of calls on it
None of them referred to any specific area or use.

Via monitoring with UniTrunker, the following talkgroups also had units joining them but no voice traffic was recorded.
TG 3012, 3013, 3014, 3015, 3016, 3017, 3018, 3019, 3020, 3021, 3022, 3023, 3026, 3029

I was monitoring WISCOM in the Fox Valley and DCI Tac 1 was operational, TG8301. I'm also hearing the County Scan talkgroups working for Brown, Outagamie, Calumet, Winnebago. Mostly fire comm which are found on the primary dispatch channels on the respective systems.

Programming WISCOM (beginner)

This post really belongs in the Beginner's forum, but it is suggested I post it here since it concerns WISCOM.

I have a Uniden BCD996P2 scanner. When programming WISCOM into a System, do I create one Site per county (so that my System will end up with about a hundred Sites in it?)

Thank you.

You wouldn't necessarily have to program all of the WISCOM sites - just those in your immediate vicinity or other areas you may travel to.

For example if you live in Eau Claire area, you wouldn't need those sites in the Green Bay area.

Also "sites" are one section of the system's programming. Groups of Talkgroup IDs are another section of the system's programming and I think this is what you mean by "counties".

If you use a software program like FreeScan or ARC XT to program your scanner, like is much easier. These software packages have a feature where RR premium subscribers can download the data to easily program scanners. Makes programming life so easy!

Thanks for the reply. The main reason I was interested in scanning WISCOM was to hear the Wisconsin State Patrol no matter where in the state I was traveling. (I've read about the WSP pulling off of WISCOM, but I'd still like to program the entire state in case they go back on WISCOM at any time.) What I meant by "counties" were not talkgroups, but the physical sites/towers themselves. There is approximately one site/tower in every county, and approximately 100 sites/towers across the state.

I should have phrased my question a little differently and asked it like this:

On my Uniden scanner, a trunked system's frequencies are stored in a Site, which is stored in a System. Should I create one Site in the System and dump all 250+ of the state's frequencies into that Site, or should I create one Site for every physical site/tower in Wisconsin? In other words:

SYSTEM: WISCOM
---SITE: WSP
------250+ Frequencies

OR

SYSTEM: WISCOM
---SITE: Deerfield
------5 Frequencies
---SITE: Baraboo
------5 Frequencies
---SITE: Blue Mounds
------5 Frequencies
...etc.

Thanks!

Each site should be separate so you'll have that 100 plus sites. You can't put all frequencies in one site as the scanner won't "work" right.

Don't forget about a second system with WSP' conventional frequencies.

I also highly recommend a gps device for travel. They are really nice as they "turn on" the correct sites when you get into their coverage footprint.

I've got the WSP's old conventional system programmed, although the only thing I've heard on it over two consecutive nights is one little burst of static.

Thanks for the info... 100 separate systems it is! And I plan to get a GPS receiver as well, especially for when I travel out of state.

I've only listened to WSP a few times passing through Wisconsin - maybe once per year. They definitely are not very talkative.

If all you are going to program is WSP, it should be easy. The challenge you would face is if you tried programming all of the talkgroups as they are laid out in the database. The scanner is limited to 20 groups, though the database has more than that. So you would have to do some group consolidation. Not too difficult, but time consuming.

WSP does most everything through their MDCs in their Squads. Especially with the new program that they have been using as of late.

As for the programming, program all the WISCOM sites in and use the GPS to turn them on. I've found 15 miles to be a good start between towers.

Kenwood cleared for WSP?

Looks like Kenwood may have fixed their issues, they passed testing with new custom firmware and new Kenwood codeplugs.

Unknown what the problems were, but fixes include "Explicit, RX Only TG, Danecom Support, Cross mute for SVR/Wireless Mic Fix, etc."
