Do you have a PC you can use to program it? that is the easiest way. You can grab a free 30 day trial of software to use and get it all programmed up the way you need it. There are some really good tutorial's for that scanner on Youtube as well. I would suggest watching a few video's on programming the scanner to get familiar with how it is structured, it can seem a bit overwhelming at first but it isn't too bad once you begin to understand the system. once you have everything set up you can just import right from RadioReference into your scanner and get up and going. I'm sure others here will have some more tips for you too.

There are 2 software programs for the WS1065: Butel ARC500 and PSREdit500. I use ARC500 Basic. It is far faster and easier to use programming software than programming the scanner manually.

This wiki article - items that are in blue are links - will get you started. Don't ignore YouTube and the Scanner School (for which we have links at the bottom of the article) for helpful videos

If someone were to add the YouTube videos for this radio, it would be helpful

I have never used a software program for any scanner, as they are way above my tech knowledge. Have always sent them ( or SD card ) to Whistler , and they do a good job . Saving me alot of headaches. For perspective, I don't know how to even send a Text Message and don't want to learn . The digital world has somewhat passed me by . I've read alot about people running programing software who always seems to run into some kind of problem during the process....

The Butel ssoftware has always been my choice for GE/RS/Whistler radios. You can download a trial version to see how it works.

You don't know how much you have missed by not using software. A WS1065 does not have a SD card to mail to have programmed. That means that anytime you want to make a change in the programming, you have to ship your scanner to Whistler. If you have the software, it is very easy to make changes yourself. Sure, it takes a little time to learn how to program, but we are here to help with the learning process. Having software allows us to share programming files. If you run into a problem, you can attach your file for us to take a look and check for errors. Part of the fun of having a scanner is being able to program it yourself. trapperjohn212, welcome to Radio Reference! Please don't be discouraged by the negative comments. You will find that the majority of us have an entirely different attitude. I would be very happy to create and share a file with you to get you started scanning. I find that it makes it a lot easier for someone just getting started to be able to look at the entries in the software to see how it is done.

The TRX2 has an SD Card, and is above my capabilities to even run it programmed. It Stays locked on one trunk group' so I
don't miss anything , the 1065 stays on another . I only listen to 2 Agencies . A Bearcat BC365 CRS stays on scanning only
High altitude military UHF AM Freqs . I do have Extra Ham license and new Icom7300, but find it about useless as the bands are nothing like the 80s or 90s , unless you're running 1000 watts and a towering $3000 antenna , 100 watts doesn't do well any longer with an end fed wire , as it did decades ago. I try to keep things as simple as possible. Thanks anyway, David ................

You install the programming software on your computer. We can provide the links. Did you purchase the scanner new? I should have a programming cable that came with it. There is a Whistler cable driver app that you run to install the driver which allows your computer to communicate with the scanner. We can take you through step by step to get your scanner working.

Here is a Stanislaus County ARC500 file to get you in business with your scanner. Download ARC500 Basic and install on your computer. Download the DEMO. You can purchase the software later if you like it. Here is the link: ARC500 BASIC 2022 software download (butel.nl) Here is the link for the Whistler cable driver installer (CDM20830_Setup.exe): WS1040/WS1065 Scanner Firmware Updates and Downloads | Whistler Group Running that app will install the driver required for your computer to communicate with your scanner. Once the software and driver are installed, save the attached zipped file to your computer and extract. Connect the scanner to your computer with the USB cable. The scanner end of the cable goes into the PC/IF jack. Using ARC500, click on the File tab and Open the extracted file. Go to the Scanner tab and click on Upload to Scanner. The file should transfer into the scanner and the scanner will begin scanning Stanislaus County. If you have any problems, I will talk you through them. The trunked system talkgroups are in scan lists 1 thru 9. The Stanislaus County conventional frequencies are in scan lists 11 thru 15. Scan lists as follows:
SCAN LISTS:
1. StanCo Interop
2. StanCo Fire
3. StanCo Sheriff
4. Ceres Police
5. Modesto Police
6. Turlock Interop
7. Turlock Fire
8. Turlock Police
9. Turlock Misc
10. Blank
11. StanCo M/A Conv
12. StanCo Fire Conv
13. StanCo EMS Conv
14. StanCo Law Conv
15. StanCo Misc Conv

Your present model will "work" in that it will receive some traffic from the system. But, unfortunately, because the system is simulcast the only scanners presently available that can properly monitor the system are the SDS-100 & SDS-200. They are best programmed by free Sentinel software. I'd stay away from the TRX models.

Also the SDS models do have a zip code feature where you can just enter your zip code. That might be ideal for you for now.

I have the Uniden SDS200 and the Whistler WS1065 Running side by side, Honestly I have not had any issues with simulcast, however I'm running Dual Discones each "tuned" a bit differently so that could be why the Whistler is doing fine with it, Occasionally I admit the whistler will give me some garbled audio but the next time around it's locked back on. SDS200 though breezes right through. I think location and antenna set up have a bit to do with it, but the tech in the scanner is playing the largest role for sure.
