beats me...I guess it would be something the techs would do when they set it up. I wonder if they know or really care. I would think they would.

Your radio displays this w/o you entering it into any of the searches, channels, systems, groups, etc.? I don't think I've ever seen mine display anything that I didn't program into it. When I park on this system's CC, all I see is the SID and tower number.

yes. it will only do it during a search. so, you will need to set a custom search (or use the public safety) for say 452.000 to 462.000. set the CC Only setting to on.

That's what I was using. Still, I only get the SID: information. Hmm. Perhaps the Charleston tower is not sending anything?

are you doing a search by setting a custom search or are you holding on it during normal scanning?

Custom search, CC only on, etc. The radio goes into T/G search, etc., as expected, but mine has never displayed anything other than SID and twr# that didn't come from programming that I put in the radio.

not all systems have this set. I've seen both. there's on for the DoD/Military in Norther VA that says "Los Angles Control" or something close to that.

Article in the Charleston Gazette..

From http://www.wvgazette.com/section/News/Today/2006121422

=======
In other action Thursday, the grant committee unanimously approved $40,000 to upgrade radio equipment at Metro 911 to sync up with 157 new emergency radios worth nearly $270,000 that will soon be distributed to every public safety agency in the county.

The statewide interoperable radio system will provide better coverage and eliminate problems that hampered those who responded to the Sept. 11 attacks and Hurricane Katrina, said CFD public information officer Dave Erwin.

West Virginia’s hilly topography and rural emergency calls have long left emergency responders with spotty communications. Kanawha County Sheriff’s Lt. S.C. Crosier said deputies could not speak with Metro 911 dispatchers during a bomb squad call in Paint Creek on Thursday afternoon.

Erwin demonstrated the new system’s long- and short-range capabilities by using a handheld unit to radio the West Virginia University Medical Command Center in Morgantown and a communications center in Charleston.

Every emergency room in the state will also be connected to the new system.

For example, EMS workers transporting a patient by ambulance from Charleston to Morgantown could radio every hospital along the way to relay the patient’s vital information if they need to stop at an emergency room, he said.

State Homeland Security Director Jimmy Gianato said Kanawha County emergency workers will have very good coverage on the new communications system by early next year.

Gianato said he recently used his new radio to communicate with workers at the state Capitol from near Dulles International Airport near Washington.

Emergency agencies will phase in the new radios over several years as funds become available.

Police and firefighters using the new radios will be able to communicate with their colleagues who have the current ones thanks to a seamless patch routed through Metro, Erwin said.

Later Thursday, Kanawha County commissioners approved the grant committee’s two expenditures.

Has anyone heard any traffic on the frequencies for site 1005 yet? I have them programmed, but thus far all has been quiet when I have been monitoring. It sure is odd to have another site so close to North Mountain considering the coverage from that site. North Mountain certainly covers Jefferson quite well (although I admit it may be limited inside some buildings, I don't know). Might have been more cost effective to get licensed for those additional frequencies and then add them to the North Mountain site. Then again, there may be other users that "need" the site at the WV/Va border location.

Sssshhhhh! After that comment it won't be secret any longer. LOL
I was referring to other users as maybe federal users from DC area piggy backing and wanting to use system to contact offices in Jefferson County (such as Park Service, Customs or maybe USCG in Berkeley County). Jefferson Co site may have better coverage of the panhandle into DC area than North Mt. Other than that, N. Mt probably would suffice for coverage in Jefferson Co since N. Mt is basically line of sight for both Berkeley and Jefferson.

Talk radio
County first responders go digital to communicate in previously silent places

By Dave Gustafson
Staff writer

Gov. Joe Manchin shakes the hand of 5-year-old J.T. Taylor, son of Smithers Volunteer Fire Department Chief John Taylor, at a Wednesday ceremony at the state Capitol to celebrate an advancement in emergency communications in Kanawha County. Manchin handed out new digital radios to representatives of all county emergency agencies.

Kanawha County public safety officials gathered at the state Capitol Wednesday to celebrate a new era in cooperative emergency communications in the county and the state.

Within a month, every public safety agency in the county will get at least one of the 164 digital radios to communicate with each other during emergencies as part of the statewide Interoperable Radio Project.

The radios, which cost at least $1,400 apiece, eventually will replace less powerful ones carried by police, firefighters and EMS and found in emergency vehicles.

They will improve communications for first responders, whose well-known communication problems led to confusion during responses to the Sept. 11 attacks and Hurricane Katrina.

“The one clear lesson of Katrina and 9/11, was the failure of us, government, to give you the basic tools to talk to each other in simple, efficient ways,” County Commission President Kent Carper said to the dozens of emergency officials.

Emergency officials must now determine how they want different agencies to communicate now that they can all speak to one another.

They will set up “talk groups” to let ambulance drivers talk to firefighters or allow neighboring police departments to better coordinate their response to a high-speed pursuit that crosses jurisdictions, said Charleston firefighter Dave Erwin, who is in charge of implementing the radio project.

Erwin said the radio he is replacing would not have worked inside the state Capitol where the ceremony was held — a big liability when firefighters inside a building need to hear an evacuation order.

Instead, the new digital radios open up communication in places first responders could only dream of, he said.

For instance, much of the state Capitol Complex now has radio coverage. The same goes for many rural areas of the county.

The only place Erwin has had trouble communicating is in the elevator shaft of the second basement of the former Diamond department store building in downtown Charleston.

The new radios also have an emergency button. Instead of yelling for help over the radio, police officers and firefighters could hold it down for 3 seconds to alert Metro 911 dispatchers that they are in peril. Dispatchers won’t be able to tell their location, but will know which person is in trouble.

At the ceremony, Erwin showed off the long-distance capabilities of his radio by contacting Dr. William Ramsey of the state Department of Health and Human Resources, who played a major part in building the statewide radio system, who was in a building in Martinsburg in the Eastern Panhandle.

At a meeting in Charleston last week, Erwin contacted the West Virginia University Medical Command Center in Morgantown.

Kanawha County’s portion of the statewide plan to improve emergency communications follows a similar $10 million communications project in Monongalia, Marion and Harrison counties that was funded by a federal grant.

State Military Affairs and Public Safety Secretary James Spears said the Interoperable Radio Project is in its fifth year and has cost $35.5 million, mostly from federal homeland security grants.

The state’s most populous regions from Huntington to Charleston to Morgantown are mostly covered by the new radio system, but 11 more towers are planned throughout the state to provide total coverage, he said.

Local emergency agencies will phase in the new radios over several years as funds become available, Erwin said.

Does anyone know if there are ANY tower sites or relay station in MASON COUNTY, WV operational yet? I live just across the river in Ohio. I know that Mason County, EMS and Point Pleasant FD are all still operating on their regular UHF systems. Not heard any changes there yet!
Thanks, Steve/KB8FAR

if it's not in the RR database, probably not. I searched the FCC licenses and nothing with digital emission showed up. so my guess would be no.

I thought the group was doing a good job here with keeping the W.Va sites up but I thought I'd ask. I know the Charleston and Huntington TV stations were touting the Gov talking from one end of the state to the other earlier this week on a portable radio. Just not the MASON COUNTY end I guess !!!! Thanks for the reply!!! Steve/Gallia 911

Its coming Steve, be patient! :)

I've programmed my 2096 per the instructions here for the WV sites that are operational. I'm hoping that when something that I can hear "goes active" in our area I should be able to hear it OK....

We'll just keep scanning it!!!! He He He !!!!
