I had to go to deepest Boone County today to visit a couple of mines - I was literally in the Twilight Zone (well, it was Twilight, anyway, right there next to Bandytown)...
Anyway, I finished my meetings early, so I maundered on up WVSR 85 to the top of Kopperston (or Bolt, if you prefer), and spent a good deal of time seeing what I could come up with. Man, that's a hot place - for a while, I had ten Interop CCs!!! (Granted, some were pretty weak). On conventional, I was picking as far as Mason county to Greenbrier, Braxton to Mercer, so I was tuned in, ready to do battle with the southern half of the interop system....
Problem was, nothing was happening! I got a few affiliations, things I already knew from the CRW sites, but nothing major, with one exception - I heard a Law Enforecement call on 5933, but it was to a Mercer County location - so, I think that the gun may have been jumped just a little by placing 5933 as MACdowell (I love the way they say that) Sheriff. I tend to agree that the x9xx's are regional, and for whatever reason, someone is just testing on the regional TGs.
What bolsters this is the fact that I was hearing all of MACdowell's PS vhf PS channels going strong, as well as Wyoming, Raleigh, Mingo, Monroe... The only dead spot was Mercer. I was picking up Bluefield and Princeton PS fine, but not once did I hear a county wide transmission on their vhf-uhf channels. Perhaps THEY are the ones that are doing the testing in that area. After all, there have been rumblings for a while now about them switching over to Interop.
Just two cents worth from me and my (very) filthy coal mud caked vehicle.... (I hope it rains tomorrow so I won't have to wash it...)
