I just got a used FT-991 radio. I did a full reset and now when I choose waterfall option all I get is a gray line at the bottom. I did a manual sweep and it still remains gray. Waterfall was working fine prior to the reset. Anyone have any ideas?

Both the spectrum and waterfall displayed activity prior to resetting the radio. Now the spectrum part displays no activity either. The bottom portion remains gray as shown in the attached picture.

It's been a couple of years since I fooled with a 991. If I recall after factory reset you need to go into menu's and turn it back on and set it how you wanted it to display.

Make sure you have Menu 004 selected as Scope. then at the bottom 4 selections in the display, touch Sweep.

For clarification, this is the 991 you have and not the 991-A ? My 991-A did some strange things after a reset. If you take a handi-talkie and transmit near your 991, will it be picked up by the spectrum analyzer? You really do have to go through each of the 150+ settings in the menu to see if anything go skewed during the reset.

P.S. The 991 had a "static" display that required the sweep button to be activated. The 991-A is "dynamic". But keying an HT for about 30 seconds while pressing the sweep button a few times should show your signal on the spectrum analyzer.

Patience and persistence, but please report back here as to the results of further tests.

Yes, I am going through those one at a time. I wish I had another 991 to compare the settings.

Looks like others here are also trying to help you troubleshoot. They are also looking for clarification as to whether you have the 991 or the 991-A. One that is established, others can help verify what the latest firmware is and compare it to what is showing up in your radio. Perhaps you can make a screenshot or just take a photo of the screen on your radio that shows all the firmware packages that are installed.

Also wondering if you were able to see if you are getting a spike on your spectrum analyzer screen if you key up with an HT ?

I can't emphasize how close I was to giving up on my 991 after my reset botched a couple of settings. I had to take a break for a day and come back to it fresh to finally detect the settings that were causing my problem.

Is the unit behaving normally in all other respects? Transmitting and receiving and all that kind of stuff? The 991 series does have a few other "quirks", but let's try to get this issue resolved first.

Thank you all for your responses, problem solved. Apparently the original owner had the 991 upgraded to a 991A. I did not realize it until someone brought up that I should look for a sticker. I found the sticker on bottom of radio advising that this was now a 991A. I reloaded correct software and this fixed the issue. I also did the MARS mod this morning and all is working fine now.
