42.0000 186.2 KA5824 MO HP - Statewide mobile

Interesting to see this frequency logged. I've heard non-domestic DX on 42.000 MHz before but never the Missouri Highway Patrol users on that frequency. A quick look through the FCC database shows only two licenses on 42.0000, KLS456, which appears to have all MO state frequencies plus interop frequencies associated with it for disaster/emergency temporary base use and the KA5824 license you mentioned in your post. I guess the FCC made an exception for Missouri as far as use of that frequency goes. It appears to be a government/military frequency and not listed under 47 CFR 90.20 - the public safety radio pool, which goes from 39.980 MHz to 42.020 MHz as the next available frequency. Hate to see the MO lowband system go by the wayside once MOSWIN is completely rolled out, especially with their 2-5 kW low band base stations. See:

KAA201 (MISSOURI, STATE OF) FCC Callsign Details
KAA202 (MISSOURI, STATE OF) FCC Callsign Details
KAA203 (MISSOURI, STATE OF) FCC Callsign Details
KAA243 (MISSOURI, STATE OF) FCC Callsign Details
KAA270 (MISSOURI, STATE OF) FCC Callsign Details

49.6250 150.0 US MIL

I suppose the military is making use of their 49.600 - 50.000 MHz allocation now that the lowband cordless phones are all but gone.

I always love reading your logs, kkn50.

I know code. It has been my experience that morse code decoding software generally dosen't work very well.

If you don't know code probably the easiest way is to record it and look at it with something like Audacity or GoldWave that has a wide waveform display . If the audio sample isn't too noisy and there is no other audio in the background you can easily see the short and long tones (dots and dashes) and spaces and look up the characters on a morse code chart.

There are several software packages for ham radio digital modes that can also decode CW via sound card audio.
The only ones that I know of off hand that are free are fldigi, hamscope and multipsk.
W1HKJ Software
HamScope
index

YMMV on getting them to decode short duration high speed CW like repeater IDers.

It's nice to see that someone other than me enjoys Dx'ing the VHF Low band. I get agencies sometimes hundreds of miles from me. A couple of them I get almost every night. I use an Icom IC-R75.

Midwest Tropo early 9-26-2013

I never post pictures, so this might not turn out. But tropo is really great here in the MIdwest this morning. I'm right where the WV/PA/OH meet. A nice sweet spot.

This is not unusual for anybody who watches for tropo patterns, but this is unusual [in Ohio] in that it's not real common to get such a great path northwest of here. Usually the good path for me is into downstate WV.

One thing to note -- This map does not tell all. I can tell, by the fact that I'm hearing about 14 distant WVSIRN sites off of the back of my UHF yagi, that there is tropo enhancement deep into WV as well. Given there are fewer APRS stations in WV, that probably is the reason why the map doesn't show the whole story.

I've been doing UHF DXing exclusively tonight. I'm hearing UHF from across the lake, into MI, into Indiana and likely further. A gazillion NXDN trunked sites can be heard as well as a gaggle of TRBO Connect Plus sites.

If you're sleeping at 2 am, you're missing it. Of course, it has been going on for many hours now.

VHF Propagation Map

What it looked like at 2 AM 9-26-2013

Interestingly, DXMaps.Com does not have a single spot in the Midwest from the past few hours. I guess all the hams have a bedtime.

F2 has been struggling this autumn but following the CME impact today brought an unexpected amount of traffic. Unusual that the opening favoured only the E and SW paths with no Russian or North American signals, nor did the morning opening go any further than Israel, Turkey was absent as well.
