OK, I replaced my 996XT with a new 536HP . I use it in my Big Rig as a mobile unit only, 10 hours a day 5 days a week, Loved The 996XT as it worked flawless. super Bright display day or night.

I replaced it with the 536 and I was very disappointed with The Back-light being so Dim .
even with it on The highest Setting (the #3 setting) it's OK while driving at Night.

(Day time) it's (virtually impossible) to see the display ?
My question is there a firmware To fix this ( i hope) My 996XT is back in my Big Rig until I find a solution?

I did notice My back-light on my 436HP Hand held is a little more brighter and appears to have more of a white color than the dull dark blue color on the 536?

I had the same issue with two BCD536HP scanners and had to send them in for repair. Here is a link to the picture of the difference:

Mine in the house which runs 24/7 has dimmed over the past 12 months, while the one in the car, which doesn't run anywhere near as often is much brighter :-(

Same story here. I have three 536HPs. One is at daughter's house in Phoenix which I use out there when go to see grandkids. That gets used relatively infrequently, and it is brighter. The two I use at home are dimming quite a bit. Actually, I try not to look at the display, but rather, ARC536PRO virtual control or ProScan virtual control to put some life into the display. I have scanners from years back that are brighter.
Good scanners, but quality control leaves a bit to be desired.

Uniden has another major problem with this issue. They need to address it like the headphone jack issue and clock battery issue. Why should we have to pay for shipping if this is a widespread problem?

And can anyone tell me if the "repaired" units dim over time? How are those holding up?
