One thing that I've wondered about is interoperability. In Boston there are a number of public and college (private) agencies that have cross jurisdiction. It's useful for them to hear each others radio traffic. With encryption that can become much more complicated.

and its a BS Argument, it they implemented LLA they would not have to encrypt voice on dispatch, no rogue radios

I'm everywhere Focker!
Don't make me search those archives! It may have been perception but I do remember posters began using 'E' for that reason.

People used “e” under the false impression you couldn’t discuss encryption. What wasn’t allowed was discussing encryption AND live audio streams. But we have a special thread for that and have for 11 years now.

The timing makes it appear to be a "political hot potato" issue, and suspect it's more to hurt Lori Lightfoot then a genuine concern for public knowledge.
And now Lightfoot's opponents have chimed in

It's almost as if though I wrote the script for this one .

I still stand by my previous post, and living in Chicago, following politics for as long as I can remember, saw this coming a mile away. The most interesting statement I heard in this report was the response that only giving media access wasn't fair to the public....ouch!!! Touché Chicago media, Touché!

For those of us who've lived through the Bilandic Blizzard, the "29", and the Meigs Field overnight surprise closure, Mayors have always done it their way and on their own schedule. The difference is this time, is Lightfoot's political advisers know she's behind in the polls. What better way to show she means what she says and is "transparent"? The media has been relentless, even as far as involving national media, conducting interviews etc. and get back to yo

So....for any Mayoral candidate or media folks following, I have the perfect "zinger question" that I bet her answer will be played over and over. "How many arrests have been made where a criminal was utilizing a scanner (not a phone app), and committing a crime? "Oh, I'll have to research that and get back to you".... Which we all know what that means...none!

Chicago's Morning Answer on AM 560 (local talk radio) talked about this at the beginning of the show earlier this morning:

The Chicago Police union guy is good. He just hates Lightfoot. He does make a point a 30 minute delay is nuts. I think a 5-10 min delay is reasonable.

I've been asked a couple questions via DM on Twitter in regards to these stories. Scanners have been around since the 70's, but wasn't has been around was social media and streaming, which seems to be the biggest hang ups and reason for going to encryption. Add the "rogue radios" that were transmitting (which I think RR's free database access then), made it easier to acquire CTCSS tones and input frequencies. We can't overlook that fact unfortunately. When it's often mentioned, that "people were listening to CPD on their phones", that's where it's time to reevaluate what we do here in regards to streaming. While I understand the "need", a "mandatory delay" should be implemented so we demonstrate we can improve. Of course the work around is to buy a scanner, but as many of us know, programming some of these trunking systems are alot more complicated then the good old days of buying crystals at Radio Shack. The trend will continue unfortunately, unless we get a hold of it.

The "silent dispatch" which they've been using since PDT's were installed in cars:

Probably because of the Twitter follower who posts "play by play" dispatches for all to see from Zone 1 overnights

Between cell phones and mobile data terminals, there are plenty of ways around crooks listening to confidential information.

I know a lot of police officers and EVERY ONE of them has two cell phones. One is the work phone, which is discoverable in court proceedings, and one is their private phone. There are also MDT apps for smart phones so that detectives can find information even if they are in a vehicle without a MDT.

From last night one of the Twitter posters:

16: xxxxx & xxxxx - Three males seen cutting the catalytic converter off a Taxi cab, offenders last seen driving n/b on xxxx in a white Audi SUV.

So...as you can see, encryption is hard to fight when this stupidity is being put out on social media. If you think "no one probably knows", you can be sure they do.

Zone 1 is one of the few zones still unencrypted.
