Thanks Dave, great info that will help in my decision to buy or not. Any words on the delayed position I saw on Monday?

Someone was either not sharing in real time or they set their station location incorrectly.

ATCTech,

Although it may not be what you were observing, some volunteers send up MODE-S ALT messages coupled to ACARS POS reports where the A/C may not normally be sending LAT/LONG as part of ADS-B messaging. In those cases, the positions could be up to 10 minutes off - the greater the time that has elapsed, the greater the error, since the A/C reported an ACARS POS.

Very nice work Mark. Thanks for your efforts. I hope to have the DPD antenna up this weekend, although right now my tower is covered with ice. Stay tuned!

Hi Guys,

Just a quick update to say thanks for all of your help and support.
We supplied quite a few receivers to members on this site and I've made a few friends too.
We will have another batch of receivers soon and are still keen to extend coverage and fill some gaps.
Our advert free website at planefinder.net - Real Time Live Air Traffic Flight Radar has also just been updated with new features such as playback so you can see the coverage there.

Thanks again for your help and support.

I saw my plots on the video! 3 seconds of fame! ;)

Yeah, new site is nice. Well worth the effort that went into it, as well as the backend that's supporting it's features. Apps are working nice as well.

Micro ADS-B shipping

I'd heard that i can take up to 6 weeks to get one.
Ordered mine on Sept 29, got a note from them saying it shipped on the 30th and it was at my house today the 6th!
It only took 8 DAYS to get from Bulgaria to Canada!
Am looking forward to trying it out this weekend.

Just curious but what is the fascination with watching ADS-B screen data ?

For me it's like watching paint dry but this may be because I spend all day doing ADS-B commercial transmitter designs ?

It's a great thing for monitoring. For me, mostly all I use it for is milcom. I do feed to Plane Finder, too. It's also nice to see what friends are departing from the local airport and what they are doing (with unicom on, too), even just with MODE-S. Besides that, for me, the glorification lies in all the tankers, and interesting military aircraft, like E-3's or such that can bring large activity into the area.

If your asking why do I listen to milair? Because I am fascinated with military aircraft, and I am planning to go in the Navy to be a pilot. Being a pilot, (specifically military) communication is a big part. If I make it to the Navy, I'm going to know tons more about flying from the experience of having a pilots licence and even a bigger step up with communications compared to the guy coming out of college that has never flown a Cessna before or doesn't even know what a pitot tube or VORTAC is. So yes, it is just a small part, but it has a link in with all the other things I do related to aviation :) I'm one of the few young monitors, so I don't know what the elders story is.

Anyways, Hope that helps! That's my story atleast!

The Micro rocks! I'm logging hits a solid 250km to the north and west, 150km to the south and east. All with the stock antenna on the end of a 12ft pole and some USB extensions.
Mashed - i find it cool to see the planes appear on the scream and wait until I can see them with my eyes. It is awesome to be able to know who they are and where they are going. The ADS-B is already helping me monitor air comms more efficiently and with way more satisfaction.

Ok

No I wasn't getting on anyone's case about monitoring Mil air or anything like that, I like to listen to that band also.

The Ore NG is next to me and black-hawks are flying all day and night 24/7.

It's just that when working on ADS-B all day I guess I just find it boring looking at the moving maps and the data screens, I'm just old world radio and I would rather be listening to real Voice transmissions.

I'm sure if I was a gynecologist I'd get bored with that too, nah come to think of that probably not, I think I understand now.

But it's true that when you work in a particular field of design it's very rare that you have working equipment for that field at home.

I'll have to give plane spotter a try and see what it's like especially since I know that I can't afford any of our commercial equipment.

I'm sure you've heard the parallels about auto mechanics that although they can fix any type of car that they also drive crappy dying cars, it's the same in commercial avionics design, you typically cannot afford the equipment you design and you rarely ever get to see it in a real world setting.

Hey Mike - I totally understand.
Check out Planefinder dot net. I really like them. I especially like their mobile app on my iPhone.
Given your field of work I bet some folks here might have some tech questions for you. Myself included!

Mike-

I would be willing to guess that the majority of users of ADS-B / Mode-S receivers ARE simultaneously scanning the airwaves, or are using RR to "sync" audible radio ATC transmissions with visual data on-screen. In fact, I would presume that like me, many airband scanners started by listening to, recording, and feeding radio transmissions and soon realized that the ADS-B technology enables us to "see" A/C within a 150 mile radius (vs. perhaps a 30 mile radius on the best day with the average scanner and a decent antenna).
