Jefferson County Area

I've been searching AFRN in Jefferson County for several weeks. I'm I correct in that 769.28125 is the only Control Channel?

So far, I've been able to hear LifeSaver and MedFlight talking to AirComm in Huntsville, Birmingham and South Alabama (31039). I've also heard the simulcast of ALEA from time to time while they were testing on one of the TECH channels (2993). TECH-5 has also had sporadic conversations between radio techs (2997).

I have heard the same talk groups, plus some more. Yesterday there was a great deal of test traffic with talk group 2997. One of the 3 people on that group said she was in Calhoun County, one was in the Wilsonville (Shelby Co) area, and a third that never said where he was.

Occasionally, Madison Co Sheriff will come through for an hour or two. I have also heard a fire dispatch from Madison Co as well. A couple of days ago I heard talk group 27249 on & off for a couple of hours, but I could not tell who or where it was. They did mention the rest area on I-10, but that was the only descriptive item I heard. Just before this last storm system rolled through, the mutual aid talk groups were active with radio checks with the State EMA site in Clanton.

Here in Montgomery ALEA Central (the actual Montgomery disparchers) will sometimes dispatch for other posts. Most of those dispatches I hear on the AFRN system, but I do not near the other side of the traffic. I assume they use the AFRN to get thier signal to a particular post, then it is patched in to that areas VHF frequency. Yesterday they were talking to units on I-20 about the FBI being in unmarked cars responding to that alleged kidnapping in Mississippi.

I monitor AFRN every day (I'm retired) and so far I have seen any indication of any Phase 2 traffic on my GRE 800 or Radio Shack 668.

Mississippi EMA on AFRN

A Mississippi EMA has been on AFRN using talking group 3805 (listed in database as one of the Mutual Aid frequencies). Since noon, they have been announcing the tornado warnings for various Mississippi counties. Last on just now @ 3:58PM.

Honestly, I have no clue. I thought it was Phase II if the screen said DAT. Everything on the AFRN shows DAT for me.

DAT means that you are getting a signal from the control channel.

Yes all the talk groups for PC police and fire are using full encryption. The only TG not is for Public Works (Engineering) and I was told they have asked to be encrypted.

If the citizens team up together a court case can be filed and encryption on the PRIMARY Main TGs can be removed due to the Freedom of Public Information and knowledge Act. I have seen it happen more than once and it was successful. I have seen 3 agencies get heat for having encryption enabled on their Primary dispatch TGs and they ended up removing it.

Can you cite the instances in which encryption was removed due to public baclkash? It is my understanding that Freedom of Information does not apply to live traffic. The radio traffic is recorded and should therefore be available after the fact, but I don't believe it applies to the traffic as it is live.

I agree that at least the main talkgroups should not be encrypted.

Please give references to these cases. I am interested in learning more.

I will try to locate some details I read it in a news article some time ago. It was 2 agencies in TN and 1 in North Carolina I believe. I'm not sure how the laws of Alabama are regarding encryption on main channels but in TN ive been told technically they are not allowed to run "Full Time" on main channels but they can do whatever they want with tactical channels, etc. Ill try to locate the news article on it, it had a lot of details.

There is an MOU between MS, and AL for interop on the MSWIN and AFRN. This is set up via ISSI, as is the full GulfWIN (TXWARN, LWIN, AWIN, MSWIN, AFRN, and possibly the SLERS) There are mutual aid/interop TGs on all these systems for interstate mutual aid/interop. There should also be an MOU with TN for interop/mutual aid linking the AFRN and TACN for disasters etc...

If all the planning works out and all the agreements signed, then the GulfWIN will grow to also include the TACN. :)

You will only hear the Phase I TG's, and only the NON Encrypted ones at that. And from what I see as far as down on the GC, that ain't much. Pretty much all the LEA's down there are fully E, and almost all the FD's are running Phase II.

ALEA on AFRN

Been listening (in Montgomery) to ALEA in Montgomery dispatching G-1XX units and G-2XX units for about 6 hours now. Just listened to a 10-100 in Walker county.

The traffic I hear is very clear and easily understood.

Just FYI.

P.S. Still just phase I.

New Talkgroup?

Been listening to ALEA in Montgomery dispatching G-XXX units on Talkgroup 28112 today. That group is not listed...wonder if it is a permanent # or just temporary.

Anyone else hearing this?

New Talk Group

Heard "Poarch Creek Dispatch" sending medical units to an address outside Atmore on Talkgroup 27249 this morning. After a few minutes the medics arrived; sometime later the medics went in service advising dispatch that person treated was being transported to Bay Minette by ambulance. Sounds like 27249 is a medical / fire dispatch group.

Verified the address by searching google maps.
