Just to clarify. Does the CC rotate through all channels, or is it that any channel can be used as the CC channel?

Today's CC is the same as yesterday, which is why I ask.

On Harris systems all freqs are cc

Thanks. I'll probably only have a bit more time to listen on this trip. After that, i'll likely only be in the area a time or two. I'll be just as happy if they stay on the EDACS system a cew more months.

I heard transmissions on 770.50625 NAC 46A this morning between 6:55 and 7:19. One call was to "Hokes Bluff Road". Very good signal into Childersburg.

Our system in Madison County can be active in Baldwin County if they turn the talkgroups on down there. Same for Morgan Co. and the Clanton and Montgomery towers. Some agencies have permission to use those, some don't. Scan usually does not work.
For instance, if I am going to a meeting in Montgomery, AL which may have 10 or so rf "channels" and I scan everything in my radio back home in Madison County, I am going to quickly tie up several of Montgomery's 10 channels. However, if I am only allowed to hear one at a time, I am tying up much less of their resources.
Usually, if I am in the Montgomery, Prattville or Clanton areas, I am monitoring Madison County Sheriff Dispatch 1 on those towers.

Same question here. Can anyone confirm if this is true or not? Last time I was in Huntsville I never landed on Madison city PD.

Does anyone know if the City of Madison Police Department police talkgroup is now encrypted? I was able to hear them but can no longer. The following talkgroup id is what I'm using.

30325 7675 D MPD DISP Police Dispatch

Madison Police are using Dispatch 2 for operations which is encrypted. Dispatch 1, which is not encrypted, was used in the beginning and up until several months ago. A very reliable source told me that a particular police captain did not want the news media hearing dispatch because it could give people a bad perception of Madison.

A reliable source in Birmingham told me that it's the agency's choice on encryption.
The Jefferson county 800 system has went through. Upgrades. He told me he choose to leave dispatch channels open but all other law channels .example Homewood pd has a open dispatch channel. But uses a tac channel for dispatch .

I hate to see E making its way into Jefferson County. Unfortunately that seems to be the name of the game with the AFRN. Wouldn't surprise me if in another 5 years or so most of everything worth listening to in this area will go E.

I understand why agencies do it, but with there being such a push for transparency in government it seems counterproductive.

This will sound amateurish but I know next to nothing about these huge systems.

I’ve noticed on AFRN & other states 700 MHz systems that some agencies operate with encrypted and non encrypted channels. Is encryption achieved through the system or by something programmed into each radio? In other words, when switching between non encrypted and encrypted channels, is there another step each unit has to take, like flipping a switch, to activate encryption?

If encryption is through the system and seamless for radio users, would inputs, then, be in the clear? Could it be that simple? I suspect not but I hope someone here listens to inputs and can say for sure.

The encryption and decryption is done in the radio. Each encryption key is assigned a reference number that is part of the transmitted data that tells the receiving radio which key to use to decode the encryption. Every talkgroup can use the same encryption key or each talkgroup can have a separate key.

Talkgroups can be programmed to be clear and then the user presses a button and then it is encrypted or the talkgroup is encrypted 100% of the time with no user intervention. The latter is the most common way since the user doesn't have to decide.

To answer your question though, inputs are encrypted as well.

Very well explained. Thank you, morganAL!

On the user end, the encryption is not noticeable except for an icon on the radio screen. The audio does not sound any different. On the Madison Co. system, it is 100% in use with no intervention from users on the encrypted talk groups like Morgan said. Most are secondary channels such as records, car to car, supervisors, etc.

Has anyone been able to hear 11656? Curious and Thank you

Talk Group 11656 is still active at times.
Talk Group 11656 is/was patched to 159.105 - Law Enforcement Dispatch (Police & Sheriff) - Digital DMR
It appears that the patch seems to be up and down a lot, mostly down for some reason not sure why.
I usually hear/see it appear when there is a lot of US Forest Service - Game Enforcement activity
in and around the Talladega National Forest but I have not heard/seen it lately but I have not been
looking for it either, I may have missed it due to poor tower signal coverage in my area.
Sometimes I hear them talking for a short time and then there gone.
Apparently the patch is not active fulltime.

AFRN Tower Sites

I am seeing a lot of new unknown Talk Groups and UIDs and a couple of new
neighbor sites show up lately on the AFRN system.
Has anyone noticed any new 700 or 800 MHz. Tower Sites become active lately in any
of the following counties, Conecuh, Dale, Jefferson, Shelby or any other County?
I am seeing a couple of new Sites show up as neighbor sites on Zone 2 and Zone 4
Just Curious if any new sites are up that are not listed in RR Database.

These Tower Sites below are showing up as a neighbor site.

Neighbor Site for Cherokee County Towers # 109 & 110.
System Id = 46B
RFSS = 2 (2) - Site = 015 (F) - Site Name = Evergreen (Fire Tower)? - Site County = Conecuh?
Control Channel Frequency = 771.93125
This Site is showing as a neighbor site on the Cherokee County Towers as Current.

Neighbor Site for Calhoun County Tower # 101.
System Id = 46B
RFSS = 4 (4) - Site = 023 (17) - Site Name = Shelby? - Site County = Shelby?
Control Channel Frequency = 771.04375
This Site is showing as a neighbor site on the Calhoun County Towers as Failed/Current.
Not sure if it's currently active or not but must have been at one point..

These are some New Talk Groups that have shown up recently, here are a couple of TG's I have seen.
Zone 1 Talk Group 11842 - UID's of 249xx - Seen on the Calhoun County Simulcast Towers. Unknown Use.
Zone 3 Talk Group 30150 - UID's of 30022xx - Seen on the Calhoun County Simulcast Towers. Possibly Huntsville Fire Use.

I have also been seeing a lot of Zone 4 UID's show up lately as 4xxxx & 4xxxxxx.
Looks like these UID's may be from the Jefferson or Shelby County Sites?
Ideas/Comments would be appreciated.

Hello all, Was in Mobile the other day running pro96com on sites I could find and upon checking them when I got home found some info that may need to be checked with info in the database. These 3 sites show as system 00a and WACN 673AE. However the tower site numbers don't exactly match and the frequencies on site 3-03 are totally different. Look at the neighbor list on the following and you'll see the c.c. frequency does not match the site. Also the RFSS numbers are incorrect. Might need to check and correct.

Also remember Harris p25 system. All freqs are the cc. Not like Moto where only up to 4 at time rotate. So literally any active freqs could be cc on any given day.
