AFRN has a WACN of 673AE and a system ID of 00a.
Mobile P25 has a WACN of 927f4 and a system ID of 00a.

Something does not add up with the listed data. I know the system is still in the build out and testing stages so maybe changes are being made.

No. It is connected via RF bridge but it is notpart of the statewide system.

So is the Mobile P25 system part of the AFRN?? The frequencies listed for site 10-003 on Mobile P25 (Salco Rd) are the same as what I found on site 3-03 of the AFRN system.

New to AFRN

Not new to the scanner hobby just new to AFRN system. I added the system my BCD996XT a few days ago. I have the network broke down into 4 systems on my scanner, had to do that cause the software or the scanner wont let me program more than 21 groups under one system. I'm using ARC-XT Pro software. Under each system I have my groups and the sites that go with those groups, or what I believe are the sites that go with the groups. So far all i have heard is Hoover dispatch (2703) & Hoover FD (2725) on site 008 Birmingham (TelVue). I heard them both Sunday morning and haven't heard them again. Can someone fill me in about the system or when agencies use it? I thought I would be hearing more traffic than I am. I've not been into the scanner hobby in a while. I'm working on get my info updated and better organized. I have basic knowledge of how trunking systems work. Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Thanks

**UPDATE: I believe I just uncovered one of my issues, my BCD996XT does not support Phase 2. Looks like I need to invest in the BCD996P2.

Are you expecting to hear Huntsville and Mobile area traffic? If so, don't. The only way you will hear that stuff is if one of their units comes to town and they have agreed to allow them to have permission to use the towers there in the Bham area. I know my radio only affiliates with towers that Madison Co. was involved in setting up. Those being all the home towers (Madison Co.), Clanton tower, and Montgomery tower. That being said, I only get certain talkgroups in those areas and scan doesn't work as they don't want us going down there and hogging up all the capacity on those smaller capacity sites by scanning everything in our radios.

Thanks emcom for the info. No I don't have Mobile in my scanner. I have sites like Attalla, Boaz, Calhoun, Gadsden, Birmingham, Hoover, Decatur, Huntsville, and few more from the surrounding areas. I have been hearing Hoover FD & PD a bit and just today I heard someone from the site 10 (Falkville) asking for a radio check.

Based on your location, you can likely hear the Falkville (Site 10) site OK but probably none of the other N AL sites. Jeff Co has a site in Warrior as well as the Simulcast sites and other sites in the B'ham/Hoover/Pelham areas. Not sure if you could hear Anything from Etowah or even Calhoun/Talledega due to the terrain between you and those areas. I'm not sure how far along Birmingham and Jefferson Co are in their migration from Smart-Net/Zone to P-25 but for the other areas listed, the P-25 systems are the primary systems for day to day operations.

If you had again antenna outside, you might could pull in one of the Huntsville towers. I forget where exactly my mobile loses signal down that way.

The antenna for my scanner is mounted on my ham radio tower at about 35ft.

Maybe I'm missing it but what exactly is the point of the AFRN if radios from one area won't affiliate if carried into another area and if traffic can't be heard systemwide?

There are certain inter-operability talkgroups that do operate system-wide. The reason all talkgroups don't roam system-wide is because of resources. The sites in the system don't have infinite resources AKA there are only a certain number of channels per site. For example, the Chief of Police Conference is held in Orange Beach every year. If you had the Chief of Hsv PD, Decatur PD, Birmingham PD, Anniston PD, Madison, and Gadsden PD all there and all wanting to listen to their agency's radio traffic then you just overloaded the tower at Orange Beach and now the normal users at that site have to contend with queuing and busies that they normally wouldn't have to worry about.

As an Admin on the system, I can tell you that the sites in Morgan Co are busy enough at times that I don't want or need traffic from an agency six counties away tying up channel resource so one guy can listen to while he drives from wherever to Huntsville. I can also tell you that it would be nice if we could let all of the talkgroups freely roam but aside from the technical reasons stated above there are also (as in all gov't) political factors involved as well. It would be really convenient if ambulances transporting from hospitals in Morgan Co to hospitals in B'ham could call on the radio when they are at their destination and when they are clear and enroute back. Right now, they can't on their normal dispatch channel. Could dispatch monitor one of the statewide talkgroups? Sure, but now it is a training issue for the dispatchers and all of the ambulance personnel. And it is one more thing the dispatcher has to keep turned up. Could the system owners do a better job of facilitating roaming of certain talkgroups and allow more roaming? Sure, and they probably should but first-hand knowledge knows that there are some personality challenges that would have to be overcome and political challenges as well. Then the last thing is money. The owners of the individual systems have put a lot of money into their systems for the purpose of serving the public safety community in their county, not a county halfway across the state. Some system owners would be happy to let anyone roam, within reason, for a fee.

No it isn't perfect, but it's what we have. Since the State could never pull its act together and build a statewide network, individual counties and cities have done what they can to build a system. Oh, and the Alabama First Responder Wireless Commission?? It is a board whose sole purpose is to guide and make recommendations to the governor regarding the First Net Network, Although many of the system owners are members of the board, the board itself ha nothing to do with a Statewide P-25 radio network.

I am in western Birmingham.
The only afrn site I am able to hear is the telvue site.
The only thing I hear full time is Hoover pd and fire.
On occasion Birmingham pd has patches on the telvue site.
This seems like a total waste of resources.
I thought they were going to put more towers up.

As a frequent visitor to the Birmingham area, I came away from my most recent visit wondering what Hoover's plans are as far as which system they plan to eventually migrate to for their primary fire and police radio traffic - AFRN DTRS, Jefferson County DTRS, or conventional? Can anyone shed light on that?
