Hoover will be on AFRN. Shelby county will also be on AFRN. You should start seeing Shelby county TGs in the next month or so. I believe Jefferson county will patch their system to the AFRN.

Affiliated talkgroups

I am in western Birmingham.
The only afrn site I am able to hear is the telvue site.
The only thing I hear full time is Hoover pd and fire.
On occasion Birmingham pd has patches on the telvue site.
This seems like a total waste of resources.
I thought they were going to put more towers up.

By design, you are only going to hear talkgroups on that site, that has affiliated radios there. If there is not a radio affiliated to the talkgroup you want to listen to on that site, you won't hear it. That is how the resources are managed.

Talked with the System admin today you should start hearing the Shelby Co VHF simulcast over the Shelby sites of the AFRN system. Also Hoover is also being simulcast over the Signal Mt (Sterrett) site for testing as well. So far the system range is amazing and pending no issues units should begin transitioning over to the new system in about 3 weeks. The VHF simulcast TG is AE5 and that is probably temporary no ID's will be translated in the current configuration.

This may be the wrong place to post this question, so please forgive me if that is the case.

In reference to the above comments regarding the Shelby County system, I recently downloaded the latest firmware update on my Uniden BC436HP. Under the Alabama First Responder Network, the Shelby County sites are now listed. However, I cannot figure out how to input the TGID, 2897, into the radio's memory, as it does not appear presently on the display. Can someone assist me with how to do this? I have the link to the online reference manual, but it is highly confusing. Up to this point, I've been receiving Shelby County Sheriff's Department on the P25 system, but wanted to be ready for the transition.

Help?

Again, I apologize in advance if this is not posted in the correct location on this forum!

Not familiar with that model.
But on my older 996 models.
You would have program a new system .
Try this
Make sure radio is in control channel mode via settings
Cause radio should get the band plan info from control channel.
1. Menu program system
2. New system
3. P 25
4. Standard trunk
5 . Name system -name of system
6 Edit site - name of site
7 set frequencies
8. Edit group
9. Edit name
10. Edit channel
11. Input talk group.
12. Name talk group.
I hope this helps

Hello all, i only pass through yalls great state of Alabama once a year. What would happen if I put every cc channel in my scanner? Or is that not a good idea?

Depends on the area you are traveling through.
It's not 100 percent operational yet.
The database is up to date.
Could be hit or wise with traffic.

My technical issues have been resolved. Hearing both Hoover PD and Shelby County Sheriff's Office on the AFRN system now, as SCSO has completed their switch to AFRN. Great signal, and definitely no issues on coverage as had been experienced with the old P25 system.

Now, Cahaba Valley Fire/Rescue and Chelsea Fire/Rescue are dispatching on AFRN. System is really picking up and doing well.

Wow...it seems I am now picking up Birmingham PD Dispatch on TGID 3153! I wasn't familiar with the ID when it came up on the AFRN channel, so I saved it in an effort to discover which department is using it.

What you are listening to is the Birmingham PD South Dispatch talkgroup. It has been allowed to roam on a limited number of Shelby County sites to improve their coverage along the 280 corridor.

I haven't heard it on the system in several days. When I did hear it, I heard units being dispatched to calls in the 280 corridor and other portions of Birmingham, including the north side. (9th avenue north, etc.)

Hearing Pelham pd on the telvue tower.
Unknown if it's a permanent.
Since this is not a simulcast site.
The id is 2771 safe to assume it's phase 1 since I don't have phase 2 capacity.

I think you are correct about phase 1. It seems I was told it would be phase 1. My radio can do either, but when I set it for phase 1, I started receiving everything on the system for Shelby County.

Pelham transitioned to the AFRN this week. In general, all Shelby County agencies can use Jefferson County's AFRN sites along the county border. To conserve talk paths, channels are only active if a subscriber is listening to the talkgroup on the site. Pelham has a tower in the middle of their city, so I imagine they would connect to it most of the time. However, if a unit was better served by Telvue, then it would certainly connect and start broadcasting the traffic. It will be interesting to see how often they hit the Jeff Co site instead of their own tower.

As far as I know, all of Shelby County will be Phase 1.
