Lol, they're doing voice quality tests on tg 6, basically a recorded narrator reading words and phrases - maybe there's a plot line (sounds like a sea story.) Narrator has an English accent. Slight echo. Using a new traffic channel 856.0125 for the P25 system but also exists on the SmartZone system.

Does it sound like this?

Not really. It's been playing for at least an hour since I've been back in my office, and so far it doesn't seem to be repeating - but the "story" is pretty boring, lol.

That's pretty common these days for system testing. It can be interesting to listen to.

I just got home and popped it on. I believe he's reading Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything. The Audible copy is apparently free, at least on Amazon UK. The paperback edition is 675 pages long, so I'm guessing whoever is pumping this into the system isn't worried about it ending too soon...

I discovered what was causing the echo - a VFO from the SmartZone system was playing the audio from the P25 system. The VFO was configured to play P25P1 tgs, and the voice testing on the new system is using P25P1 and not TDMA atm. So user error on my part - there is no echo. Audio sounds good.

Use the Site or System tag on the VFO's to prevent them from tuning to the P25 system.

I have to learn how to configure that - it was not necessary before. It will probably need to be a System tag since the site numbers are the same.

The tags can be anything you want them to be. Go to the Info tab of a Site window, and give it a unique Tag. Now go to any VFO(s) that you want to only decode voice traffic from that site, and in the Voice section, enter the same text into the Site Tag field. Done.

The audio test went off the air at 2:40am this morning. Reiterating that its quality was very good to excellent, exceeding DAQ 3.4 imo.

I don't know what's worse, the fact that I realized that at about the same time or that I had left the entire system on Record mode and now have 270MB of recordings of the audio test (broken into calls...everytime you hear the boop noise, another file)...

They're doing more reading today - tg 6.

I wish they would bump up the volume a bit - the G5 doesn't have enough audio power at highway speeds. The aristocratic English accent doesn't help either.

I had it on briefly at about 14:30 or so, my reception was less than stellar, though. I just turned it back on and all is quiet.

Looks like it was playing for about a total of an hour.

Judging from the pattern of channel grants over the past few days, it appears that the ebook-reading voice tests are occurring in encrypted mode.

The same four state police RIDs continue to be denied registration on the system. Their radios are looking for the St. Mary's County system. Note that the AACo control channel and the current STMC cch are only .025 MHz apart and are of roughly equal power in Calvert County - perhaps that has something to do with it /speculation.

I was pleasantly surprised to find a moderately stable control channel along US50 from the Lane Bridge to Easton.

Good coverage along MD32 to I-95, south to the ICC, and westbound on the ICC until about New Hampshire Ave.

Over the past few days, five SUIDs from Atlantic County NJ have been denied registration with the system: 123600; 104697; 104026; 800005; 508832. Note that 851.1375 is also a channel used by ACNJ, and 851.1625 is the current cch for St. Mary's County. Subscribers from both these systems (and only these two foreign systems) attempt registration from time to time. Both ACNJ and STMC are L3/Harris systems. I'm not sure what subscriber units are used by ACNJ, but the MSP radios on the STMC system are likely APX mobiles.

No, the G5 uses a very old Bluetooth version and protocols that are not widely supported.
