I use a Diamond RH77CA on all of my handhelds (125AT, 396XT, 436HP). Excellent performance.

For me I've used the RS 800 for a Long time since 2001, I've thought of trying a spectrum force or something equivalent, I do have other antenna's I can use..

I helped my antenna's signal a bit by Buying some Top Quality Right angle BNC I bought 2 right angled one's from PASTERNACK Enterprises and I can tell Difference in signal and as For Build Quality there at the Top of the Line they Lock onto the scanner and stay in place and the Antenna fits snug not Loose here is a Link to PASTERNACK if any one wants to see there Products and they can make any thing for Electronics. :) bear780

Cables, Coaxial Cable, Cable Connectors, Adapters, Attenuators, Microwave Parts

thanks for that link. i have been in need of a right angle bnc for a long time. i will order an extra even, just in case.

I use the Diamond SRH77CA, signal carries about 2 more bars of strength vs the stock antenna.

I bought the SRH77CA and i got a lot less signal and bars. I really cant understand it. Only being a mile from a tower on phase 2 simulcast you'd think i would picl it up with a race stubby. So I'm sending the diamond back, no need in a collection of antennas.

Wow, really? I'd encourage you to let them send you a replacement just to make sure it's not the antenna.

What radials? I only see a diversity radiator. It's not too dissimilar from half an ST-2, but on a smaller scale (higher frequency)

Their not ground radials.....The configuration allows slight turning ,and locks into position for the 4 towers I am able to pick up Apco transmissions. I can receive each tower now and do not get double talk pickups. I am no expert on antennas. All I know is this configuration that was made for me works extremely well. And for an inside antenna it works exceptionally well. Just thought I would share a pic. In no way shape or form suggesting it would work for anyone other than in my location.. It improved clarity, modulation and has eliminated garbled receive........ I am very happy with the results.

Works Good

On my 436 I have been using a scanner master antenna I purchased from AES. I also have one on a 396T scanner and both are providing good results. The description claims a little bit of gain and I believe it does provide as stated compared to others I've tried. Its very affordable and for me it's my daily used antenna on my hand helds. Check it out at aesham.com/antenna -scanners/. It's called Scanner master SFA-800S. I mainly monitor 800 stuff but also found it to be problem free on analog. For me it's a great and affordable antenna. Take a look at it, give it a try and its easy on the wallet with good performance. But of course YMMV for your needs.

Great antenna pic!

To lake erie larry.......One thing I've learned over the years in radios and the amateur radio world is to build, try different things and do what is right for you. I read a lot of books as guidelines and tried a lot of different things and even had advanced class operators tell me my antennas would never work and I would be lucky to hear anything. Well I beg to differ as I have gotten great results and a thrill hearing stuff and receiving distant stations with antennas I've ever built or tried even though it wasn't in the books or told to me by an advanced licensed operator. So if it fits your needs on P25 use that's all that matters! Phooey on the rules in books and people saying it's not going to work that way!

So since looking at Larry's antenna here last night I've been bugged by it, mainly because I'm curious to check out the theory behind the design but I can't figure out what it really is! Like Voyager said, it looks like half an ST2, or more accurately it looks like the top half of a biconical. Anyone know how to classify this multi-element, omidirectional (I'm assuming) vertical?

There are so many antenna types, it's hard to classify it. It's like a vertical/half-biconical hybrid.

But, I have little doubt it works well for the size.

As for not being pretty, except for the joints of the elements, it look pretty nice.

Name that antenna!

Such a unconventional design deserves a name! That's what will distinguish us in the scanner hobby as a FUN group of listeners. Some amature Ham guys get caught up in I'm right you're wrong, specs , designs and the more advanced you are in your licsense your opinion on theory. That gets stuffy and turns people off that are new to amature radio or thinking of getting in it. We all should and could be having more fun.
Whatever the theory, design or reason it's cool and it worked for you! That whacky antenna could use a name! Any thoughts anyone?

I checked through my ARRL Antenna Book, 20th edition abut didn't find anything really similar other than the biconical designs already mentioned. However there was a thread posted here back in 2011 discussing the Radio Shack Sputnik. Link below.

http://forums.radioreference.com/bu...6-radio-shack-sputnik-build-800mhz-added.html

Pay attention to that QSL.net link in the thread as well. Still doesn't name the design but there seems to be some history of the technique.
