• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Good luck with the new 578 ahbood. Will look out for you on DMR to discuss your opinion. Think we spoke on Arizona TG 3104 previously when I first discussed my experience with the 578. I’ll look for you there or on So Cal 31066.
Yes sir, we did speak on TG 3104. I have installed the radio in the car and so far the only thing I am going to complain about is the audio quality, I have the radio installed in my Jotto Desk center console and its hard to hear. I am actively searching for an external speaker and will have to report on the difference.

just a side note... if you have a GPS installed version D578UV. Theres nothing preventing the GPS antenna barrel connector from turning in the radio housing. DON'T OVERTIGHTEN YOUR GPS ANTENNA CONNECTOR.

I've had one since early December. I was pretty impressed with it overall, especially the ability to configure the rig to your preferences... very similar to the D878. Unfortunately, however, my D578 was one of only a few that had a problem with the firmware update from 1.03 to 1.05. Somehow during that process, I lost all DMR receive audio. Everything else seems fine... just no RX audio on any digital channel. Anytone reports that they are working on the issue and may have a solution sometime next week. In the meantime, I'm watching the digital contacts quietly pass by on the display.
I HAD a 1.06 version (returned for other issues) which would lose DMR audio for a while sometimes after updating the codeplug. Never did figure why.

@gman1971 , You are correct over the past couple of days, when running the frequencies or memories scan with Digi Mon activated,
I also noticed that the radio freezes...
I wasn't sure if it was linked to the USB port always connected to my PC so I disconnected it but no improvement.

These bugs are really annoying and unacceptable.
The more I test it, the less I like it....

Update (2021/01/05):
After the latest firmware upgrade, I can see real improvement.
- No more radio frozen, even if sometime I noticed radio reboot (quite rare).
- Additional test with SFR was much better (even if still not as good as pro DRM radio) and is acceptable.
- Once the offset is correctly configured it's working well for DMR reception.

I must admit that the manufacturer is responsive and really try to improve things.
I like it !

Respectfully, it this some sort of manufacturer shilling?

The issues with SFR hanging up and freezing are still all there with 1.11. After using an XPR5550e for several months I can safely say the 578 adio is slow!!... it chews the first 1/2 second of nearly every transmission... especially when GPS and other features are enabled, etc... Like I said, I ended up replacing it with an XPR5550e.... never looked back.... and speaking of looking.... I don't need a magnifying glass to read the screen anymore either!!

Good times.

I am using Hytera as said before and we shouldn't be comparing "oranges with potatoes".
Anytone 578 is definitely a far cry from the big professional DMR radio manufacturers and clearly less expensive.

I am not using GPS or APRS and before the firmware update the radio was frozen after a few hours of DMR scan.

I agree, after many hours the radio is getting slower (less responsive to the button) but no sound problem on my end.

I made the customization of the display which has better readability.

Once again I got answer from Anytone support team which I never ever get from Hytera after 5 years....

Cheers

G. Are you programming your XPR5550e yourself? Looking to get one, but I'm finding programming software and cables expensive. Your thoughts are appreciated. Jim

Hi Jim,

Yes, I program my own radios.

Hmm, cables expensive? You can get the one a ham makes, that one is fairly inexpensive. I think its 39 bucks. I have both, the OEM and the one made by this guy. Both work. The one from moto I think has a ferrite choke... thats about it.

Hytera sucks, that is what I've been told by pretty much anyone I know who runs professional systems. Their customer service, as you also stated, sucks pretty bad. Anytone I think is linked to Hytera in some form, since there is some similarity on the design cues on some of the radios.

Yes, the 578 is an overpriced toy compared to the XPR5550e, and at 400 you can buy a mint used 5550e and program whatever you want on it. Yes Yes, I know, no VFO, no scan, etc...

The cable is free. Every XPR mobile radio comes with an ACC plug with pins. Find a free printer cable anywhere, & cut it by the plug at the printer end. I’ve spent the five minutes a few times making the cable. This way, the mike doesn’t need to be unplugged whenever programming is needed, & it’s free.

If the portables could transmit on one slot and then receive on another it could work like a regular repeater. I think...
The 878 has a chnnnel option option called Slot Suit that allows the radio to TX on whatever slot it hears traffic. Used with a 578 in SFR mode, you could use the same channel programming for simplex or repeater use, but the radio would be switching slots constantly if there was a 3-way conversation, or it started intermittently picking up the input slot from the other subscriber radio directly (not through the repeater).

If it wouldn't freeze up after 20 minutes in SFR... that would've been amazing... tried that....

My experience has been different, at least so far. Certainly not crashing every 30 minutes.
