Actually the firmware upgrade issue is a major hurdle for me. None of the Japanese sellers have confirmed the latest AOR firmware so who knows which version one might get.

I don't mind the size, there's a lot of hardware inside that enclosure.

After at least a year of looking and prevaricating, two days ago I managed to get hold of a used 5700 from Martin Lynch & Sons at a semi reasonable price. It was sold new in January this year so hoping the firmware is fairly up to date.

First impression is how heavy and solidly built it is. With my less than perfect eyesight and chunky fingers I like my radios to be even bigger with more buttons and controls readily available on the front but I’m pretty happy with it as it is. In operation it reminds me of the AR3000a while being much more substantial and a lot more versatile.

I was a little worried that my local light rail transport Tetra system was only producing occasional bursts of static and no voice transmissions, however a check with an Airspy on SDR# is now also giving no voice even though it is still not shown as encrypted. Is anyone having success with Tetra reception in the UK?

Looking forward to playing with Cyber Search on the Civil and MilItary airbands. In the meantime I’m very happy with the speed of normal search and will continue getting to grips with the user manual.

I monitor a large, non encrypted, TETRA transit system in the U.S. I have no issues monitoring on both my 5700D and my DV-1. I start my 5700D parked on an AM aircraft frequency. I turn the squelch to just past the static. Once the 5700D warms up, I notice I can decrease the squelch setting further. Then I begin scanning mixed mode, TETRA, P25, and analog FM/AM. It's quirky but it wouldn't be AOR without it's quirks.

Thanks for the reply @SigIntel8600 I now have Tetra working fine on the only unencrypted channel we have available here. I think my problems were most likely down to how little activity there is on this system.

I’ve had a busy weekend playing with the 5700 and have just realised how useful the spectrum display can be. I was resigned to not having an LCD screen similar to the IC7300/ICR8600 but having tried it out this morning on the UHF Airband I’m pleasantly surprised how good it is for spotting activity and then being able to tune to it.

Try using the 5700 with the sdr# software, it works very good and you have a hi-res spectrum display.
Version 1920 supports the AOR 5700.

My 5700d left the Fedex hub in Japan this morning at 2:35 AM. I'll post here the firmware as received when it arrives. I have the newest version of SDR# that indicates AOR 5700 in the setup.

What software is recommended for memory programming?

The only memory programming software I have been able to find is the AR5700D Editing Software v.1.1.1.0 available on their website. It is without a doubt, the worst memory programming software I have ever come in contact with. It does not save any of your memory banks in the software. It will read your programmed memory banks, allow you to make changes and reload it to the radio. Extremely slow. If you are programming for the first time, you set parameters in the software and load it to the radio, ONE FREQUENCY AT A TIME. If anyone knows of any other software, please advise.

My radio departed the Fedex hub in Indianapolis this morning at 6AM but will be delayed until I complete a customs form 5106.

Fedex sent the form via Docusign but after filling it out it would not submit back to Fedex, kept going back to the top of the form.
I downloaded the form and will fill it out again and submit it back to Fedex in the morning. First time I've ever had an issue with Docusign.
The form is really intended for an import business and barely touches personal import for individuals.

Anyone else in the U.S. encounter this?

Not sure if it does memory handling, but another free sw for AOR 5700D: "AOR AR5700D Control Software"
(in Tsjech, use translate function)

On the whole I’m finding the 5700D is excellent. I do have one or two niggles when it comes to DMR reception however.

At the start of each over there is an annoying click just before the voice transmission begins which I don’t have at all on my Anytone receivers. In addition it doesn’t cope well with louder voices which often result in breakup and clipping distortion. Again the Anytone simply reproduces a louder voice with little distortion.

Do the keen DMR listeners here have any thoughts on this?
I can’t find any way of sending feedback on this to AOR, in the hope that future firmware updates might improve things.

To be fair this radio decodes DMR signals which are so weak they hardly register against the background noise on the signal level readout and can barely be detected when I switch to NFM mode. Very impressive.

Mine is scheduled for delivery tomorrow, supposedly factory fresh. I'll post firmware versions here.
What happen with the 5106 form.
What where the import fees and taxes
Please let us know what type of plug it comes with

I filled out a blank 5106 form by hand, scanned it and emailed to Fedex. Within 1 hour they released the radio with no notification from Customs about taxes or fees. Amazing speed, ordered on 8/14 and will receive 8/22.

I expect the wall wart will be for 220/50 and if so I will run it off my Astron 12v/35 amp supply. Will advise later today.

If you go here you can find the AOR software packages that work with the radio.
As SigIntel8600 said, the "AR5700D Editing Software v.1.1.1.0" package is basically unusable.

However, the "ARL2300LOCAL for Windows v.4.2.9L" does allow you to import and export one memory bank at a time.
This program spits out a .csv of the selected memory bank.
I exported bank 0, then edited the file with Excel and built my frequency lists.
This program also allows you to exit the scan lists and the search lists.

Good luck with the radio, I have an AR5001D that I really like a lot.
It is great on the Air bands and even on HF.
It is a great all around performer and a fun radio to use.

Arrived in excellent condition. Power supply is a laptop type brick with standard USA 120V plug and external ground wire with forked spade lug. Assume that is to connect under the outlet faceplate.

Checked several HF frequencies, local NOAA weather and my Dstar hotspot. Audio is acceptable with an external speaker. Still a lot to experiment with. Antenna setup here is a random wire at about 30' AGL for HF and 18" handheld antenna for VHF/UHF. Next is to install better antennas.
