Does anyone have info on when phase 2 of the P25 in Michigan or any where else, will start rolling out?

My concern is, the Phase 2, I am told, will use FDMA which todays scanners can not pick up.

If this is years off, great, but I saw some documentation from the State of MI dated back in 1997 when the P25 was rolling out that said the plan was to have Phase 2 started in 2010. Obviously we are past that and I haven't heard anything about Phase 2, but wondered if anyone else has any info.

Suspect its years off, as the latest APX7000's don't even support TDMA phase 2 yet. These APX's may have the flashcode option, but nothing in the firmware or software to use it.

As I understand it, there isn't even an agreed to standard for Phase 2 yet; there's no way a scanner manufacturer is going to even think of creating a codec for it until one is firmly in place and embraced by the industry. Any implementations out there now (Prince George's county Maryland being one) should really be thought of as a 'pre-phase 2' system

best regards..Mike

All of todays scanners can handle FDMA.

It is TDMA that they can not handle, and which is rumoured to be under consideration for use in Phase 2.

That being said, I'm sure that once Phase 2 is perfected and officially rolled out to the extent that Phase 1 is, there will be scanners available on the market that can activly monitor this system.

If not, there is always dsd.

The vote was made last year for FDMA Phase II. So that much is a done deal. All of the finer points are still being worked out but FDMA is decided.

Thanks all for the info. I was beginning to worry. I spoke with a Sales guy from the local Company that supply's my area Police/Fire and EMS radios (West Michigan) and he said that Phase 2 is slated to be complete by 2014. He also told me that MSP, Kalamazoo County Sheriff as well as many others in MI are encrypted, which to my knowledge they are in the clear, only a couple from the Data Base are using Encryption. So Im hoping he is just wrong all the way around.
I am assuming from what he said about the encryption is they have the capabilities to switch to encrypted if they want.
As long as I can still monitor with a Homepatrol or BCD996XT, Im happy. I just didn't want to drop $600 to find out its a expensive paper weight.

Any additional info is very helpful

Thanks again

Because if in fact what it says is Phase 2 will be implemented by 2014, and it will not be compatible with the current scanners, why spend $500-$600 for a radio that will be useless in a couple years.

I see you have a lot of receivers, thats great and Im sure you listen to much more than Public Safety, Me on the other hand, only want Police, Fire and EMS when Mobile in the car. So for people like me, I think they should read this and be aware before plunking down a lot of money.

If your in to other listening, it doesn't effect you as much.

You could still get ATLEAST a few good years oout of any model you buy right now.

Also, just because Phase2 may be completed in the next few years doesnt mean one's area is instantly going to have a Phase2 system...
These things take time. It could be years and years until a Phase 2 system may be in your area.

Well, you have a valid point, as well as the fact that most Gov Agencies dont have money, maybe it will be much longer than I think.

I just hate having more expensive paper weights, I have plenty now!!

Thanks for the good point!
