To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi all,
i'm trying to program several APX8000s operating on encrypted conventional P25 mode.

I'm trying to get the radio to emit a TPT (tone doesn't have to be fancy and single short beep also works) while using encryption. (Users complaint no audible feedback when PTT button is pressed).

TX Cleart Alert tone doesn't work on encrypted conventional talkgroups so that is out of the equation.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

In the encryption(emergency?) options, there is an option to sound when pressing ptt, which can meet your requirements

More for my knowledge than to actually use it. Has anyone setup a APX portable to use conventional TPT since they just added it to the newest firmware release? I did see in the release notes that it needs to be setup in a certain way vs just checking the box.

Before everyone gets whacker happy thinking they can have the radio sound a TPT whenever they key up...it only works on P25 repeaters, and the radio must receive the hang time carrier (at least 1 full second) before it will actually sound the TPT, otherwise you get bonked. It does not work on analog repeaters or simplex.

That's exactly the answer I was looking for. Ill try it on my Quantar for giggles but I wanted to have clarification to what I already assumed it was.

well its here with version 31 firmware with some limitations. It only works on a repeater channel, not available on talkaround, and if you have the talk permit tone enabled on the astro personality, it will "bonk" you if you are out of range of the repeater, just like a trunked system.

So you will transmit twice I'm guessing. Once to hear the hang time and the second to actually talk. Interesting.

In testing the radio transmits a P25 TSDU; waits to hear the repeater come up with a TDU tail stream, and if it does gives positive TPT and begins normal conventional voice. If it doesn't detect the repeater come up with a TDU tail stream, you pretty much immediately get the negative TPT bonk.

Negative, the radio detects the carrier....err while typing @gatekeep's post popped up. What he said lol. One PTT, just hold it down and wait, just like trunking.

So you transmit twice. :p
Essentially yea, the radio will transmit twice (assuming a positive TDU tail) for a valid voice call.

EDIT: The radios operational procedure is identical to trunking really, when you hit the PTT; it'll transmit a voice grant request to the CC, wait for response, switch to the voice channel then begin transmitting. Difference here is, it transmits, and waits to hear the repeater come up with tail, then just transmit voice.
