You forgot Carsons Rule...

Bandwidth= 2 (Δf + f m). Δf=Deviation, f m= Highest modulating frequency

A 3 KHz bw voice channel at 5 KHz deviation would have a 16 KHz occupied bw. Your 2.5 KHz deviation channel would have an occupied bw of 11 KHz.

Warren forgot something? Oh heavens no!

Since Warren knows it all, then the "rule" to which you refer must be a figment of your imagination!

Jack, I think JTRS is not ready for prime time yet, but
getting there and, I recall that SINGARS
(it was coming in as I was retiring) is 36F3,
so what does NTIA call that?
We always called it WBFM in the Army.

There is so much technology in radio coming at us so fast, it is sure to confuse the military as much as the rest of us. I see adds for JTRS-type radios in MRT mag that leave me wondering how we will pay for boots if we equipped our troops with that gear.

Fortunately the VHF marine band is expected to plug-along in "wide" for the next several years. FCC's plans include even 6.25 Khz marine channels but that went over like a lead ballon with boaters. I suppose other services could find some use for it in this shared-use band.

Will Marine Channels remain at +/- 5 khz?

Is there anything in writing by the FCC that states that the present Marine Channels will
remain as +/- 5 khz Deviation channels?
Is there a "time limit" or a target date for Marine to reduce it's bandwidth?

Why would you change the marine channels? Unless your trying to free up some space for something else, not very likely or your trying to add more channels, again not very likely there is no reason to go NITA narrow band.

There are plans showing more channels stuffed into the same band, although none of them have been implemented in the US and I expect they are not in use anywhere.

Marine Freq Help Needed

I live within 3 miles of the Delaware River, in the Phila area. I am scanning with a radio shack 2096. For some reason I can not hear ANY marine traffic. In past summers I have been able to hear marine traffic with no problem. Was there some kind of rebanding or something, I cant believe that there is no marine traffic at all on the Delaware River.

No rebanding. The marine frequencies are an international standard and are unlikely to be changed, although there are digital transmissions for ID and calling allowed on some of the channels. I would check your scanner settings, antenna, etc. to see why you aren't hearing anything.

There has been No Rebanding [YET] there are proposed Splinter VHF Channels, but they have not been approved for US usage.

What channels are you listening to, that could be the problem...

U.S. VHF Channels - USCG Navigation Center US Channels

MarComms - GMDSS and Search and Rescue Areas Int'l Channels

I just reviewed my freqs. I bounced them against the links that you sent. I agree with your list. I have exactly what is listed, I have the entire list programed into one bank. I am trying to figure out a way to post my win96 file but I cant come up with a way to do it.

I added it as a hiden page on a web site that I write, I will take the page down after I hear from you! The page and file are clean, not even a cookie.

Win96 file

Thanks

Are you sure your scanner is not being "front end overloaded" by perhaps a new vhf transmitter nearby that you are unaware of? Try using the attenuator function and see if that will possibly clear up your
reception problem.
