Has anyone, anywhere heard scuttlebutt about their new system? There was talk about it last year, but its been crickets ever since.

The county's web site lists "Began implementation of a new radio system" as one of the Emergency Communications Center's 2024 accomplishments. No indication that it has been paused or canceled. There was also a reference to the project in discussions about the National Radio Quiet Zone, where it was mentioned that the possible dissolution of the quiet zone would allow the power to be turned up on the towers.
I found another article that says "Augusta County is currently upgrading its communications infrastructure. The project, according to Whetzel, is a few months behind, but County Administrator Timothy Fitzgerald doesn’t think Green Bank or the National Quiet Zone has had or will have an effect on the radio project." The system will going live in a couple of years. They will start to build the system out soon.

To my knowledge emergency service communications are permitted within the National Quiet Zone, thus it should have no impact on Augusta.
This has been discussed a little in the West Virginia forum. One issue is that the emergency services radio transmitters are restricted in how much power they can put out. That means local governments within the quiet zone would have to spend additional money building more towers to provide the same amount of coverage. Pendleton County's request is that the federal government either remove the quiet zone, or provide the additional funds needed to overcome the power restrictions with additional towers. The quiet zone restrictions are going to have less of an impact on Augusta County, although they will have to limit the power on one or more of their transmitters as things stand today. Another issue is the lack of cell coverage in the quiet zone, which limits the ability of the public to call 911.

They are anticipating the system to go live by the end of 2025. I remember seeing something like that they are going to be doing the FCC licenses in Q2.

Crews installed a second microwave dish on the Reservoir Hill Park radio tower in Staunton, marking another step closer toward the regional radio’s project completion.

It still has an affect on licenses and such. I have worked multiple projects that flow into that area and it alwasy requires approvals from them on stuff.

I appreciate the feedback on the impact of the NQZ on areas further removed from Green Bank. Thanks for the article link with some news that things are progressing. Looking forward to how the project all shakes out.

As with most projects of this type, running a bit long on completion is not unusual.

I'm confused. Where did you get three sites from? I count six.

Apologizes. It showed three sites when I did it for Augusta county and I guess it added Staunton and Waynesboro

I have this programmed as P25 in my sds100 doing an ID search. I am getting some signal bars, but no DATA signal appearing on the screen. I guess it’s because there is no CC activity and some of the frequencies listed are currently being utilized?
Will be awhile maybe another year or so
