After many years this radio stopped updating... the incredible thing is that it continues to sell despite not supporting the firmware... What happened to the programmers?

Uniden comes out with new scanners and does not care about the 436 scanners anymore, sad.
Exactly, I know that one of the programmers died of cancer and apparently the code seems to have been closed because since then it has never been updated again. The serious problem is that it continues to be sold without support (more than 500 dollars)

The only reason I sold my 436 was Simulcast. I waited to buy it till the backlight fiasco was fixed and they added Cap1 for reception issues.
Radio worked fine. You just couldn't move it. I kept the 536. It hasn't been moved since I bought it. I just move the antenna an inch every week.
I don't see a need for firmware update at this time

Seriously, I've always kept my 436 as a backup. It has always worked just fine, except for simulcast. I also still have Jon's rechargeable external GPS module that he designed for the 436. It still works, too. I suspect updates have not been offered because, like others have said, there's nothing left to update. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

and i would hazard a guess that at some point there is nothing left to update.

An example of that would be the HP-2. No chronic problems that required a firmware update to correct. Apparently, not capable of taking the DMR or NXDN upgrades, Newer units have a slightly different firmware version, but the change is only to accommodate slight hardware differences, when one of the original parts in the design is no longer available.

Steve you are also limited to the size of the flash to store the firmware in.
With the x36's P2's and SDS's being the first with enough memory to work with.
True

And, if you fire-up the "way-back machine", you might find a comment made by the late UP-Man. He was stating that they did not think they could offer DMR or NXDN on the p2 scanners (comment was directed at the 32P3, but likely applied to the 996P2 as well) because of limited headroom in the memory of those scanners to enable the firmware coding necessary to enable those upgrades. But that, after much study (and likely after paring the size of the firmware update that would be necessary), that they were successful in offering the upgrades on the P2s.

Did UPMan not also state that the P2's at their current offerings that they were close on the on the memory limits.
Offhand, I don’t recall that he explicitly posted that, but I read the response as that was what was the case. Not enough flash memory left for other large scale firmware updates.
