There was an update today that fixes the USB serial disconnect problem

Try and and let us know

Thanks for the heads up. I installed the new 1.03.03 firmware this morning and within 2-3 hours the scanner kicked itself into mass storage mode. So, for me, no improvement. Bummer.

I had problems last night. Even after installing the firmware the scanner would go into the USB Mass Storage mode. It happen a number of times. No rhyme or reason to it. The first time it happened after just 5 minutes. The next time it was about 30 minutes then about after 1 hour. I gave up. BTW I am using the beta version of ARC536 Ver 0.89 build 10.

Have you guys looked in the scanner readout to verify the software update actually occurred? I know if it detects a CRC error in the downloaded file, it will abort, but may not report to you its aborted. Reason I mention this is I had the problem on two different computers using two different operating systems, and this update fixed the problem for me on both machines. If its still happening to you guys, and the firmware is actually updated on the scanner, it may be something different, like a corrupt driver, or intermittent serial cable.

I wanted to add that I have been using a BCD536HP for online stream for over two weeks and just now it went into the USB Mass storage. Seems odd after all this time. The only thing I changed was update the scanner's firmware but I have doubts that is the cause of the problem. I checked the Windows event log and also have the message;

DriverName WpdBusEnumRoot\UMB\2&37c186b&0&STORAGE#VOLUME#_??_USBSTOR#DISK&VEN_UNIDEN&PROD_BCD536HP&REV_1.00#0000000000001&0#

Interesting. I would first think it was a driver issue, except I havent heard any reports of a 436HP doing this, unless I just missed them. Hopefully they will get it working for everyone.

Ver 1.03.03 on the scanner display "Firmware Version"

The serial port connections has been working for over 2 hours now without a problem. I did make changes to the scanner via the USB Mass Storage "route" which i don't do that often. Normally I make the changes to the scanner by writing directly to the micro-SD card.

Well, I have had two instances tonight of it switching to Mass Storage mode. Not as bad as it was before the upgrade, but not fixed by any means.

Yes.

it may be something different, like a corrupt driver, or intermittent serial cable.

Deleted drivers, cleaned registry and reinstalled drivers. Plus, tried 2 cables not including the one that came with the scanner.

Thanks though.

Since i'm off on Fridays I decided to try something. This AM I ran my BCD536HP with firmware ver. 1.02.03. there are conflicting comments on whether this was the last firmware version before the update last week. Anyway I ran the scanner in the VC mode using ARC536 beta .89 build 10, for about 4 hour with great, almost 100% copy, decoding of my local fire department comms.

Camden County Public Safety Trunking System, Camden County, New Jersey - Scanner Frequencies

This afternoon I ran the scanner with firmware ver. 1.03.03. within 45 minutes the scanner reverted back to the USB Mass Storage mode 3 times.

At first this AM I thought it might be the Uniden supplied USB cable. I had bought a new longer cable this week and was using that. But with the same cable this afternoon I had the problem again. 99% sure it is not the cable.

Plus my copy of the transmissions was down to 85 - 90% with the new firmware. In both situations the scanner is setup the same, FM for 700MHz - 900 MHz, squelch at 2 and only scanning the closest transmitter site, Lindenwold which is about 2 miles away.

Great info. Thank-you. Do you know if its possible to downgrade the firmware? I thought I read someplace that you cannot. I may want to give that a twirl.

99% sure it is not the cable.

I see your 99% and raise you 1%. I'm sure the cable isn't it. 100%.

There is a fellow that posted on the firmware maintenance release thread that it is. In his signature is a web site where I found what is believed to be the first supported firmware release. the only problem is is that his listed firmware version is different from what UPMan has posted as the first firmware supported release.

It seems to work quite well. And thinking back when I updated the firmware when I first got the scanner the firmware from the non-Uniden site kind of looks familiar.

The firmware version I reloaded is 1.02.03 vrs. 1.02.07. And I think I had noticed this disparity when I went and updated the first time.

I have posted a new thread which may be directly related to the issues people are having here. http://forums.radioreference.com/uniden-bug-reports/286491-problem-bcd536hp-usb-mini-jack.html
I may have found the problem is in the USB jack. There appears to be a intermittent connection problem in the serial mode.

Wow. Thanks an39511. This would explain the very first note in this thread where I stated, "I hear a disconnect noise. When I plug it back in I hear a connect then the disconnect noise.". I quite often heard connects and disconnects.

One thing that I read in that other thread is that maybe the USB connector isn't getting fully seated and to try shaving the plastic back to seat better. Once I get the scanner back (on Monday) from the headphone recall, I'll try a shaved cable. A problem like this makes me wonder if inferior parts were used to keep costs down.

I already have done that cable modify. It did not work but maybe you will have better luck.

Funny thing. I was so into reading that other thread, didnt even realize it was YOUR thread. :) Thanks for doing the video. Now I'm hoping for some attention to both USB threads by Uniden.

Well I did a little troubleshooting this AM. As a reference I am running firmware ver. 1.02.03 in my BCD536HP. I connect the scanner to my computer and went into the serial mode. I didn't run any program to access the scanner. I let it run this way for about 1 hour. No problems were seen. I then started ARC536 beta ver. 0.89 build 10. within about 10 minutes of running VC and nothing else running on the computer it went into Mass Storage Mode.

I also checked in Device Manager and confirmed that the computer saw the scanner in the serial mode.

UPMan I don't know if this info will help but I thought I would pass it along. I know with firmware ver. 1.03.03 the scanner will go from serial mode into Mass Storage Mode also.

I am staying with firmware ver. 1.02.03 since I found that ver. 1.03.03 makes reception of my local fire department,http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=6739,P25 Phase II reliable only about 85 - 90 % of the time. At least with 1.02.03 my reception about 99% reliable with the mode set to FM and only receiving the closest site frequencies programed.

This makes me think that maybe the problem could be with the serial driver or with the software used to access the scanner rather than the scanner itself. Is the serial driver 64 bit or 32 bit. I had a problem with a 32 bit deriver on my computer, new Dell XPS and Windows 7 Home and Office, not working. I finally found the 64 bit driver and the device works great now.

Port driver

Looking at Device Manager right clicking on the Uniden Seril port selecting properties then driver and driver details it is stored in Sys32 so it appears to be a 32 bit driver. I am using a 64bit HP laptop with the 64bit version of windows 7.0 so if the 64bit version was available it should have installed.
