I too cannot get it to work. I changed the baud rate to 115,000 from the default 9600, ran straight thru and null modem. No Joy!

I'm trying to find the speed change for serial port in menu, but maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot?

Under GPS Setup (MENU --> Set Your Location --> Set Up GPS --> Set Serial Port)

Ok, that worked! Set it to 115KBPS and it works with the Von Wallace screen program!, BUT, I have to use external audio jack as the audio to the speaker disappears...

Will I need to still load the Uniden Serial driver? I know on my BCD996T I didn't need any serial drivers except for the 1 that supported my serial card (SIIG). If I don't need the Uniden driver I am going to uninstall it since it is not needed for USB Mass Storage mode. Now I just have to find my extra null modem cable.

RS232 ports do not need special drivers. If you are using a USB to RS232 adapter, you will need a driver for that adapter, but not the BCD536HP serial driver.

There are a couple of inherent problems with using the USB port for a constant serial connection, under the current operation. At this time, we really recommend you use the actual serial ports.

Thanks for jumping in UPMan. Could you please clarify "under the current operation"? I know that the 996XT is a totally different architecture but it still utilizes a USB connection. I have had my 996 online 24/7 with USB for years with not a single hiccup. So it makes me wonder what inherent problems the 996 can deal with that the 536 cannot.

Could you please consider adding a timeout and default to either serial or mass storage mode? So, once the scanner turns on it'll default to the end users preference of either serial or mass storage. In my case I would have it set to default to serial mode.

Thanks.

Works great with no additional drivers. I have 2 sessions of Virtual Control running simultaneously. Thanks for the additional info.

The 996XT doesn't utilize a USB connection directly. Either you have a USB-1 cable or a Serial to USB adapter hooked from the serial port of the scanner to the USB port of your machine. Either way, they both are adapter cables that convert serial to USB and they require their own drivers in order to operate.

As explained by Paul, the x36 uses its own usb connection and drivers which make the connection a little more prone to dropping when the scanner either loses power or reboots due to a memory crash.

Both my virtual control software reports "Unable to read Com port" when I try to connect the scanner. Anything special I need to do with the scanner? I set the port at 4800 8 N 1.

Never mind, it apparently wont work with my RS232 to USB adapter. So, I guess instead of Uniden fixing the scanner which was advertised to work with USB, Uniden expects me to go buy an RS232 card and install it in the computer....Boy this is getting old.

It should work with with either an adapter or an actual com port. Did your adapter work with the XT or T scanners?

The port speed of the adapter's com port should match the setting in the scanner.

I would just set both to 115200 to get the best results.

Menu->Set your location->Set Up GPS->Set Serial Port.

Ive tried all the different speeds.

It doesnt work with the BCT15 either. I had to use a very old driver to get it to not show an error in windows 8.1, and apparently the driver wont work with the new adapter. What I dont understand is why the 436 works perfectly using USB, but they cant get the 536 to be as bulletproof.

Ill just use it this way with the disconnects for now and if they cant get it fixed, Ill just have to uninstall my computer, and see if I have a open slot inside for a RS232 card.

IT WORKS
Glad Paul (UPMan) chimed in here about the rear serial port on the 536HP. I think most of us were under the impression that the serial function was limited to the front USB port. Well I now have been using the rear port with ARC536 virtual control and logging, and it works beautifully. At least for the last 8 hours. Running my 996XT with ARC XT PRO right along side using another null modem cable, and both ARC XT PRO and ARC536 on the screen logging perfectly.
My set-up here includes two 996XTs and two 536HPs. As I mentioned in a couple of previous posts, I do not like using the front USB port for VC/logging for long periods. Therefore, quite a while back, I bought some null modem cables from Amazon, installed a StarTech.com 2-port PCI Express RS232 serial adapter card (16950 UART) in one of my Dell XPS computers (Windows 7) and have long used the rear port on the 996XT for VC/logging with Butel and for CC output with Unitrunker.
So I already have what I need to use rear ports. Now that Paul commented on the OK use of rear port for 536HP, I set it up as mentioned above with 115K baud rate, and works great. Don't have to set anything else. Just plug cable in rear port, put on scanner, and the serial data flows. Did not have to set serial mode on front. Now, while running rear port serial, when plug USB cable in, usual message "Mass Storage or Serial" appears. If press Mass Storage, serial function on rear port stops, and you can use Mass Storage function. If you press Serial, the rear port just continues to send the data. When you eject the SD card from computer and release Mass Storage function, rear port data goes right back into action.
So hopefully, it looks like this serial port issue may be resolving. Of course, you need the null modem cable or adapter and serial port card. I also have a couple of SIIG USB to Serial Port external adapters that I use on laptops with 396XT and 996XT for more portable use. I will experiment with that setup as well with the 536HP and 436HP (GPS) port and see what happens in next few days.
Hope I don't have to come back tomorrow and say whole thing stopped working, but it looks good after 8 to 10 hours. And yes, we have our answer, the rear port on the 536HP can be used like on the 996XT, which for me, and I'm sure others, is great news. Gommert, if you read this, the rear port and ARC536 work great.
Once we get through some of these initial headaches, I think these new scanners are going to be a winner.
