The file link in my post works just fine.

Ronnie: The page you linked to has some dead file links due to an issue we are having on that server. The link in my post should be used.

Attempted to do the update. Checked for the correct unit and was connected to the front port. Software ran then stopped midstream. I now have a useless black box.

When I turn it on I can hear the usual speaker "pop" (for lack of a better description). Screen is blank, no backlight, no nothing.

SUGGESTIONS please

I have tried to update again, but the updater, as well as Freescan, will not connect to the scanner. It is a brick. How nice, I do an update from the manufacturer and it makes it useless. Sorry I am just a little upset.
Please anyone?

Freescan won't work until the firmware update is complete. Keep trying the updater, check your cables & connections, or try another PC. The update from the manufacturer did not make it useless.

To add to what Rob posted, according to UPMan you cannot permanently "brick" your radio by updating it. Something must have caused an interruption of the process. Apply the update again and your issue will clear.

If the updater does not detect the scanner, it shows a screen with additional steps to take. Did you perform those steps?

I have tried again:
Plugging in the scanner with l/o and 6 pressed does give me a blue screen
Auto detect found the scanner
Software reported the update was already applied Continue?
I selected yes.
Lower status showed downloading to scanner, Then Connecting to scanner
Top status bar shows 6 bars
Report - Updating Firmware Failed. Operation has timed out. Please confirm whether COM port setting is correct.
I still have a blue screen and no control of scanner.

Thanks for the quick responses

I got a 404 error when I tried to download the update. I got the same error when I tried to download the 396XT update.

Dude, I gotta tell you that the link above. It ain't working!
At least at Friday, 15 March 2013 at 3:09:20 PM EDT.

If it is, it must be the slowest damned server on the planet because it times out before it loads.
isitdownrightnow.com also reports the site as being down for everyone, so it isn't just me.

That link is working, but it is slow to load.

Have you tried using a different USB port on the computer if using a USB to Serial or the HP-1 cable?
Also, try holding in on the connector on the front of the scanner just in case it is loosing connection during the upgrade.
What OS and computer are you using to try and do the upgrade with? Maybe try and unplug all other USB devices while doing the upgrade. I've seen USB fail when other devices are removed or attached while doing data transfers over another USB port.
If using a laptop, make sure it is plugged in. That may keep certain things from powering down which could also cause an interruption in the data transfer.
The other thing you could try is use the older Bc-VUP updater. I think the latest firmware is posted out there as a file so you can load it into the older updater. At the least, you may be able to go back to the prior version so you at least have a working scanner again.
Good Luck!

An update on the upgrade of the 996XT

The third computer I tried, did the trick. It was a neighbors laptop that still had serial port. So either my cable, serial to usb, or something else was a cause. My USB to serial adaptor has worked flawlessly in the past for updates, control, and programming. So not sure what is going on.

Question, would the extra $$$ USB cable have eliminated this problem?

So thank you for your assistance, and advise. Now how do I talk my neighbor out of the laptop??????

Manny, I had same exact problem with 396XT and 996XT. I tried everything w/o success. it only works for me by going directly to the serial port. Then it was so fast it was scary!

Alright... Well, I'm officially mad...

I am trying to update my new uniden bcd996xt and the bc-rh96. I have downloaded BC_VUP, and connected the bcd996xt for the update, but when I open it, it tells me to select the Scanner Firmware File, which I cant find. From what I understand it is supposed to search for it automatically?

Next, when I try to update the RH-96, and I push L/O and 6 at the same time as power on, it doesn't go to the backlit screen, it continues through the power on cycle and won't go into update mode.

I am so frustrated, I don't even know what to do. Any suggestions? I am connecting both using a USB cable as I dont have access to a serial port.

Did You UNINSTALL your old Installer first ?
Make sure you uninstall old installer (I did not uninstall old one thinking It would just over ride it. NOT THE CASE)
Then install it through the front Port.

ONE NEEDS TO UNINSTALL OLD INSTALLER FOR THIS TO WORK

Did it work?

I installed the firmware update, and I didn't notice any change in the quality of the decode of the simulcast cast system here in Minnesota. I'm I missing something, is there something that needs to be tweaked? I did verify that the firmware is in fact installed.
