It'll never happen but I really wish BPD would have set up an online stream of their dispatch but with a 5 to 10 minute delay. That helps with the officer safety aspect but still allows the public to hear what's going on within a reasonable amount of time.

That's a middle ground I could live with on this kind of thing, but these agencies have no obligation to compromise.

FYI, I just noticed today that Trussville has encrypted all the TAC channels. This explains why they went dark on the 4th, They were using the Event channels I guess.

"Understanding Community Policing A Framework for Action"

From the linked US Government document above concerning Community Policing:

“This social distancing was also reinforced by technological developments. The expanding role of automobiles replaced the era of the friendly foot patrol officer. By the 1970’s, rapid telephone contact with police through 911 systems allowed them to respond quickly to crimes.”

“The police and the public had become so separated from one another that in some communities an attitude of “us versus them” prevailed between the police and community members.”

One would think that present day LEO administrators would recognize encrypted dispatch and traffic channels as a step backwards and indeed, in direct conflict with Community Policing.

I’m all in favor of encrypting what needs to be but not at all for what I listen to as an extra margin of safety and to possibly be extra eyes and ears for those who serve.

While I can get my radio "fix" in other ways(ham and SWL), I will definitely miss being able to know what's going on around me without having to rely on the news to report on it, if they even do. @allend I agree, I've seen this coming for a few years now, just glad I was able to enjoy the last few years of this hobby while it lasted

I've been staying in Tuscaloosa the past few weeks for a job and there is nothing there that can be monitored. All LE and EMS/Fire are encrypted full-time across all channels according to the DB, so I haven't even bothered with trying to monitor there.
if you are still there try HP there is a tower.
