Based on the news articles, they may not have any police at all come October 1st. In order to continue to use the Broward County system, they would have to sign some sort of agreement with the county, which, according to the news article, they seem unwilling to do.

These are many different arrangements between cities, & the county. Some cities have their own PD, but use the county dispatch system, like Davie. And is anyone here old enough here to remember the Pembroke Park PD before BSO took over? They were the Keystone Cops of the county. Thats why they went with BSO years ago. For a town with maybe two square miles, they had a swat team, two choppers, & drunk cops.

Yes I remember that. They had two Bell 47G helicopters, for a town of two square miles, which were kept parked in front of the PD on Hallandale Blvd.

I know BSO is unwilling to cooperate with Pembroke Park PD, but BSO does not control ORCAT, which runs the County radio system. So ORCAT would be the one to deny Pembroke Park PD to the radio system, which I don't see them doing. I do know BSO and other local PD's are not willing to cooperate with the new agency, which seems a little unprofessional. But that is just me. I also know ORCAT, and I don't see them creating talkgroups for Pembroke Park PD in just 2 days. Everything seems to take months to complete when it comes to County. This should be interesting.

The latest on Pembroke Pines PD. I wish them luck and safety, but there are so many things wrong with this story...
Pembroke Park swears in 11 police officers, department set to launch this week (local10.com)

Sounds like the mayor has a personal crusade against BSO. I’ll be watching the news for the first incident the new unprepared department has. Back to the old Keystone Cops days they were so famous for.

ORCAT is pretty squared away depending on who you deal with, at least from my experiences. The BSO radio shop guys were all solid, at least when I dealt with them.

The current Sheriff needs to have his FDLE cert pulled though....didn't the CJSTC board find PC for that 🤔....or that his Stop the Bleed company got the contract for Broward 🤔 Regardless, one can see the politics of why they want to go with their own Agency. Same reason why Coral Springs almost took over Parkland after the MSD mass shooting.

I know there was a push for some change in the state constitution, but being an elected sheriff in Florida, having CJSTC wasn’t required anyways. I know this was of great debate at a former county I worked for years ago. https://www.fdle.state.fl.us/FCJEI/Programs/SLP/Documents/Full-Text/Hall_MH.aspx

Don't want to derail the thread but I was told if they yank his cert, he can still remain as Sheriff as an elected official, but would no longer have police powers.

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum, so if not, please forgive me and kindly direct me to the appropriate forum. If it is, I'm looking for advice on how to monitor Broward County Fire/Rescue and/or Broward Co Sheriff on my Whistler WS1098 scanner. I believe I have all of the appropriate talk groups for my area (Lauderdale-By-The-Sea/Pompano Beach) programmed but I don't hear anything. I can hear other 800 MHz and conventional channels, however, so I know the scanner is receiving. I'm using a mobile antenna outside on my 3rd floor balcony. I'm in a 15 story high rise condo so maybe the building is blocking the signal, but Like I indicated, the antenna is outside and I am receiving other traffic. Can anyone offer any insight or suggestions? Can BC be monitored with the WS1098?

While I can’t answer your question,I can tell you they are phase 2, but not encrypted. I have no problem hearing them on my listening device in Lake Worth. Probably just a simple incorrect setting.

I used to have a Whistler TRX-1, which is basically the hand held version of the WS1098. I sold it, because it wouldn't work on the Broward County P25 trunked system. By not work, I mean it would almost never unmute on any talkgroup on the Broward system. Whistler scanners seem to have issues with systems using P25 LSM (Linear Simulcast Modulation), which the Broward County system uses.

I have a friend who can't get the Broward County P25 trunked system on his Whistler scanner, and he is on the 10th floor of his condo, in Pompano Beach. I have found that Whistler scanners seem to work fine on the Fort Lauderdale and Coral Springs trunked systems.

Try experimenting with less antenna. Use a short whip; even try a bent paper clip; try moving the scanner to a different place or to a different room. Or sell the Whistler and get a Uniden SDS-100, SDS-200, or a Unication G4 or G5 pager. Any of these will work on the Broward County system.

WS1098 and the Whistler TRX-1 will not pick up simulcast. I too had a TRX-1 and when the change over occurred, it became a big paper weight.

Only things that will work is a 436hp, SDS-100, SDS-200, and the Unication G4 or G5.

the Unications are not really scanners andtake time to program, but work great with the Broward County System.

This is a long shot but I would suggest NOT using the external antenna and instead use a rubber duck. The idea behind that is to minimize the Linear Simulcast Modulation by limiting the number of sites the radio is hearing. Obviously it depends on where you are but if you’re close enough to one site, this may work.

The 436hp I do not think will work either on simulcast. I had one and sold it for a SDS100. Fort Lauderdale, Coral Springs, and Plantation do not run simulcast and only Plantation runs as P25p2

Also in the running are the P25rx series, much less expensive and really do work great for P25p2 and LSM. I have two on the Broadcastify system for Broward and Pompano Beach.

Thanks everyone. That answers my question. And thanks for the suggestions. I'll give 'em a try but sounds like I need to upgrade my scanner. :(

Whenever I travel to that region, and within +/- 30 miles of the TT the G5 ( Unication stubby antenna) decodes this system perfectly with 3-4 bars and 65-75 RSSI. These of course are my experience and within my car.
