New to the scanner world. Is HP2 able to listen to RISCON? If so how? I’ve heard that I need a SDS100? TIA.

Well you don't say where you're located, but RISCON is a P25 Phase I trunked system. Your HP2 will work on it. However you may have issues with simulcast distortion depending on where you are. There are parts of Rhode Island that suffer it pretty bad, but others that don't. My experience is hit or miss on it. I suggest you search the forums for Simulcast Distortion to learn more about it.

The RRDB is accurate for RISCON, so you should be all set as long as your Sentinel master database is up to date.

I would definitely go with the SDS200. That way you have no worries. Contact bobruzzo he is from Cranston. Plus Cranston PD went encryption last month.

Yes, I agree with what Nascar18 said. Bite the bullet and get the SDS200. I bought mine in 2020 and very pleased with it. I also live in Cranston and after months of playing around with antennas, radios, etc. the SDS200 beats my BCD996P2. I found the best scenario for me is using my SDS200 with an 8 element 800mhz yagi pointing NORTHWEST! On the METRO and NORTHJ sites I HAVE to ATTenuate. And the filter is "Normal Wide". I must be close to towers cause I do get a bit of garbled audio at times but with these settings it is minimized. But like they say it's all about location,I live in the Oaklawn section on small hill. On the South and Statewide 700 sites, I only use the "Normal Wide" filter. I am far from the EAST site so I tried different filter settings but no diff. I keep it on "Wide Invert". I can get away with using a regular scanner antenna, I have a DPD Omni X that I use on my other radios. It will work on RISCON but not as good as the YAGI. For some reason, the OMNI X it works PERFECTLY on RISCON using my RTL-SDR.....Also I do on occasion use a BCD996P2 in my van with an 800 mhz trunk lip mount antenna.....reception not bad and I can live with a little garbled audio here and there.
