Unless someone knows other wise I believe it will need to be sent in so that it can be flashed at Uniden.

Have you tried to reinstall the firm ware again my 796 did the samething so
i installed the firm ware again its work and no problems so far

296D firmare update
I had a similiar problem when trying to update the firmware on my 296D.
It appears if you set up the scanner for the firmware update, you cannot get it out of the flash upgrade mode without actually downloading the firmware?? (At least I do not know of a way).
I had a problem with the comm port on my PC. I had to use a different PC to download the flash update. Once I got the update program to function, I was back in business!! You may also need to check your Comm port baud rate setting as well.
Just do not panic, find a PC with an operational Comm port (that has no "CONFLICTS" by being used by a Palm or some other device) then reflash the scanner. If you can get the computer and scanner talking to download the flash you should be in good shape and back in business.
