Nope - Celebrity (won't be back there again)

That stinks, was it on Carnival? We haven't cruised in a few years now but I never had any trouble in the past with scanners. Of course I should have just left them at home since I never had time to try to really use them anyways!

Never mind being in US ports, you are under the FLAG of the Country the ship is registered in

Just like airlines - pick one whose rules mesh best with your desires.

Interesting that a federal license means nothing to them, but for the most part you won't be in FCC-controlled waters, I imagine.

Portables

When I hear Cruise Lines talking about Ham Radio, and in discussion with the on-board staff, it seems to be BASE/Mobile type operations and not Portables.

I have never been questioned over a portable radio, even with a speaker-mic. Only a base radio, has drawn attention. YMMV ;)

I hate to bust your bubble but Portables or base stations are not allowed on ANY cruise lines for safety reasons. As anyone that has plains on board the ship (planted)that helps to others on boats or land that wants to take over the ship. look at how many freighters are hi jacked a year. Remember 9/11 No cruise line that travels in Maritime waters allows it passengers to carry any type of weapon of type of counication device EXCEPT for cell phones

OK. I thought there were entities such as the ITU that overrode FCC rules internationally, if not the country whose waters you are in.

When in international waters, under the rules of the country of the vessel's flag. When in coastal waters, the country's rules.

Overall, following the rules of the vessel's owner, and the Captain is always in charge.

My Bubble is not busted and your statement is false:roll: , as they allow plenty of FRS/GMRS Radios on-board, even to the point of renting them.

Cruise lines are profit making corporate juggernauts. They are really paranoid about anyone overhearing anything that may cause embarrassing bad publicity, for example crew talking about a waitress dropping a customers steak on the floor then picking it up and serving it anyway. As far as those GMRS/FRS radios they are locked to those 22 channels and cruise ship staff are pretty aware not to say anything juicy on those frequencies, if they even use them at all anymore. In Boston cruise ships leave from the Black Falcon pier. A friend of mine was standing across the street from there (by those hotels) and listening to a repeater frequency on his HT while waiting for a paratransit ride. He got rousted by "pier security". As far as cruises in general, if hyou like paying good money to be told what to do, when to do it and how much you enjoyed it, sure go on another cruise. For my money there are better ways of getting away.

Pier Security ? you must mean the Police
Black Falcon is patrolled by State Police, Massport Police and the Boston Police (formerly Municipal Police)

Rousted ? Harsh terms.

Hardly ever have an issue at Black Falcon except when they clear the Piers due to the LNG in-bound for Everett.

I know cruise lines are for money making and tourism. They will do anything to keep majority pleased and rid the one or two sour crouts of the lot that don't go along with whatever they do enforce. Not to cross thread but has anyone went on a cruise line and also cruised it to the Virgin Islands USA end? Any problems there or was it smooth sailing with scanner or two ways? Back in the day I had flown out there and had 2 scanners back when the islands were vhf. I believe they are LTR? Now. I remember finding a few services back then also. It was over 20 years ago.

This is from the carnival website.
https://help.carnival.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2261

Radios/Boom Boxes: For the comfort of all our guests, radios and boom boxes can be used with headphones or earpieces when used in public areas.
Ham Radios/Amateur Radio Equipment: Permitted to be used on board.
Google Glasses are permitted on board in public areas but cannot be worn at any gangway operation.

The rule anyone should follow and not have problems is keep it under your shirt with a ear bud or adapter for earbud, in a purse if your a female scanner or hammer with earbud on. I'd imagine if your openly carrying it around waving it in hands pointing at the beach your coming onto from the deck and blasting everything your monitoring all hearing I'd imagine allot will find it a nuisance and say something which gets you the no radio allowed thing. Just wear a earbud or sorts or now days a Bluetooth adapter. Nobody will care. Most people don't want to hear a scanner or ham radio or police to cruise ships on a high dollar vacation. May sound unbelievable to a scanner hobbyist or hammer but it's the truth. Specially in restaurants or public places majority don't want to hear it. When I vacationed to the USVI I just had a scanner under shirt with regular headphones around my neck. Nobody even noticed for all they knew it was music and I seen a few people with Walkmans doing same. Nobody thought a thing of it. I went on a localized tour on a small ship or boat and kept it on. Nobody said anything or noticed. That was before micro ear buds and bluetooth. I did run across a police man at the beach he seen it and just asked how much did I get mine for and can I hear the other islands good at all. He seemed more interested in scanning for himself part then me having one on me.

Cruise

I took my HT on board with zero issues.

And what cruise line was that with? ALL CRUISE LINES FOLLOW THE SAME REGULATIONS. Unless the Captain over rides the rule. which I have not found one that will. The only way one can sneak one on is IF the scanner operator misses it in the luggage or hand carry

Not entirely true.

As was posted earlier, some lines allow Amateur Radios (Scanners), while some expressly list them as prohibited. YMMV and each Embarkation Port will vary

Carnival, Miami to they Keys to Cozumel and back. I had an IC92AD and a VX7R. I sat on the deck at night when it was calm and quiet and listened to stuff out in the Gulf.

They didn't even check the liquor back on from Cozumel. They had a small table set way to the side with a small sign indicating you are to stop and have any liquor confiscated and stowed until docked. Gosh, somehow I missed that sign.

I'll trade the risk of OH MY GAWD TERRORISTS with HTs and liquid binary explosives in trade for feeling like a human. I was pleasantly surprised.

I'm an advocate of following laws and procedures but if you are not doing something malicious, and you are following the country's laws where the ship is, I personally would give myself a bit more latitude.

Honestly, What are they really going to do with you??? Throw you into cruise ship jail?

No, but they could force you off at the next Port-of-Call, to enjoy booking your own return to the States.
