Thanks for the info CFD-ERFT!!!!! So with Station #32 being open, is there a #32 Aerial in-service?? Or was the Fire Chief serious about the cut-backs??

There is no #32 Aerial at this time...fingers crossed that down the road maybe we will see it. I wouldn't say that it was really a cut back, just a delay of something that was discussed but never really officially put into place. Time will tell what support apparatus, if any, will find their way to #32.

This is a new dispatch protocol based on the current shortage of aerials in the city. It is no longer practical to have an aerial tied up at a traffic call as an SSV. Therefore a second engine is now usually sent. It also dramatically reduces the wear and tear on the aerials, as these long hard runs have proven to be inappropriate for them from a maintenance and longevity perspective.

Funny that they still send an Aerial out to do sharps pick-ups.

True. I think the rationale is just that there are many less sharps pick ups than there are motor vehicle accidents. Also, sharps pick ups are always cold responses, versus a hot response as an SSV. Responding hot is where the real wear and tear will occur, it is far harder on apparatus than a regular drive.

Caught Engine 11 leaving the station last night to an MVA, (didn't have my scanner handy unfortunately), and noticed they weren't in their regular quint but were in what looked like a brand new Engine.

Anyone know if the new Engines have been delivered yet?

My bad, instead of reading "High Rise Unit" I read Rescue Unit. So obviously this truck is going to be stationed downtown, Perhaps at Station #1 being as they have the most room??? But is it going to be staffed like Toronto's HighRise #332?

Good info, thanks.

I was thinking about my post today and what didn't occur to me at the time of seeing the truck of writing the post was the truck that I saw was more than likely 16A, 12A or 10A.

After talking to CFD member I hear the new Engines and Aerials are indeed in Calgary and ready for deployment.

Further to that, I just heard Engine 12 come on the air in what they described as a brand new truck for a radio and AVL test...so they must have received one of the new trucks. I also saw this morning that Engine 11 is using Engine 12's old truck, (based on radio ID), so I wonder if 11's Quint has been returned or moved to another hall.

I thought I seen some new trucks last week at the fire training grounds. I think all new fire equipment comes with the bright yellow stripes on the back. Must have to train on the equipment before they use so they now how everything works and where it is.

If by yellow stripes you mean red and yellow (or some other contrasting colors) angled reflective striping, that is a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standard and is done on virtually all fire and EMS vehicles presently. (Red and yellow is the standard, but some agencies do it in other colors, especially matching the colors of their vehicles.) Google Image Search for "chevron striping" for tons of examples. It's a safety measure to keep people from plowing into the bright red giant truck with lights flashing all over it. Whether or not it ends up working is still a toss-up....

Yes that was what I was talking about. Noticed only the newer equipment has the stripping on the rear or does all Calgary fire trucks have this now and I wasn't paying close enough attention.

I don't know if it's being added to older trucks. We did in Redwood to a couple, plus our new engine of course.

I'm guessing Engine 7 is new as well. Both it and the new Engine 12 has generic radio IDs of 1.

I talked to a crew a while ago in a parking lot and my son asked them about the little stickers in the diamond plate, (which is how they do the chevrons on diamond plated trucks). The FF said they were retrofitting older trucks with the stripes and the guys at the shop weren't too happy about it as they had to apply 8million little stickers on to some of them.

We did that to our rapid response :) And while I was on lunch today, I saw the air-light go by up toward the airport, and it was chevroned, so at least that one is done.

Sounds/looks like there has been some adjustments made to the District Chiefs.

There is now a "Central Chief" and from what I can tell, he is based out of 16 - which was the old South Chief's station. South Chief now looks to be stationed out of 19.

Add Engine 19 to the list of new Engines. (based on my assumption)

Although, why are the Fire Comms guys giving these trucks very generic radio IDs? Is this not causing a problem for PSC?

Damn you Jay for not being able to discuss this! :D

Engine 1 now has one of the brand new Engines.
