Engine #27 has a new Rosenbauer Engine.
Does anyone know if Engine #12 (E2804) - 2004 Spartan Gladiator / Superior (1250/500/CAFS) (SN#SE 3273 / #115802) Ever went back into service??? Or has CFD disposed of the truck??
Thanks.

Redwood Meadows Emergency Services is purchasing a new tender (water hauler) to replace the truck assembled by department members in the mid-1990s. Said truck, a 1986 Ford C8000 ex-garbage hauler from the City of Calgary, coupled with a 2500 imperial gallon Imperial Oil home oil heating tank and a 500 IGPM Hale pump in between, has reached the end of its useful life and safe operating condition.

The new truck is being built by Pierce Manufacturing, the same Bradenton, FL/Appleton, WI fire apparatus manufacturer which built the 2009 Kenworth Contender pumper received by Redwood Meadows in June 2009. The unit is being sold by WFR Wholesale Fire Rescue, the Calgary-based Western Canada dealer for Pierce Mfg.

The new 50 Tender is a Peterbilt 348 tandem-axle cab/chassis with a two-person cab; 3000 US gallon polypropylene water tank, 1000 USGPM (840 IGPM) Hale pump, and custom firefighting body painted Pierce red with NFPA-compliant lighting and reflective striping, including a full rear face application of chevron striping. The truck is powered by a PACCAR PX-8 380hp diesel engine and a 5 speed automatic Allison electronic pushbutton transmission. It will have electric-hydraulic racks mounted on both sides to fit portable collapsing "drop tanks" (which are used in tanker/tender shuttles to dump the load of water for use at a fire scene, so the water can be used at-scene while the truck goes to refill). An Arrow Stick type directional warning device will be installed on the rear of the truck for use as a Scene Safety Vehicle.

As with all Redwood Meadows apparatus, this vehicle will have radios installed for all three local fire/emergency services bands (UHF conventional, VHF conventional, and 700/800 trunking for both Calgary DRS and the upcoming AFRRCS).

Delivery is expected before spring.

Here are some photos courtesy of Pierce Manufacturing, Bradenton, FL:

Maybe the builder will make one of those walk around videos with narration. It's always interesting what they say they have to build into these vehicles going to such severe climate in Canada. Jay if there is a video online let us know other than that the photos are great.

Doubtful they'll do a video - they didn't with our past truck - but I will see what can be done, eventually....

This particular truck hasn't been built for the Canadian climate per se - in fact, it's a "stock" truck, one that they built to have "on the shelf" in case a department needed one in a hurry. We had planned designing and building a tender later this year, but time and Murphy plotted against us to require us to get one right away.

There is one thing on the truck that will help cold climate firefighting - the pump has a built-in water heater, which will prevent water outside the tank (i.e. in the pump and the lines) from freezing. That's a significant issue on very cold fire scenes.

Some good info from anther forum regarding the new trucks that CFD has ordered.

ALL the Calgary first line Rescues and Hazmats are SVI's with the first Resuces being on Spartan Metrostars (94" wide) cab as are the 2 Hazmats and then we went to the Diamond with the 96" wide like the Spartan but they all only have the Cummins ISL 400 HP engines hence we could use the Metrostar/Diamond. However Spartan discontinued the Diamond so the 2 new ones being delivered next month are Gladiator LFD 10" cabs with SVI 18 ft. bodies and will feature a new graphics and a Command Light Elevating TFB (Traffic Flow Board) that comes out of the body for directing traffic away from the apparatus.

They will then be getting a Mobile Training Vehicle which is the first of it's kind ever built in North America which features a SVI 22 ft. Body with Spartan Gladiator LFD 24" Roof Cab & Chassis with two (2) Doron Driver Simulators so that they can go to the stations and do the driver training simulation and then put the driver behind the wheel and do an actual road test!!!

They then will be getting a SVI 26 ft. Custom Tandem Heavy Rescue and a SVI 26 ft. High Rise Support apparatus that has a Bauer Air Compressor, Two Command Light Towers and a RH forward side loading lift for High Rise Carts.

Then comes 8 Smeal 32M Rear Mount Aerial Ladders with Waterous 2250 GPM Two Stage Pumps, EHL Hose Bed on Spartan Gladiator LFD 5" raised roof cab and chassis's.

I guess the Canadian Flag graphic is the "new graphic" that is mentioned in the post I quoted. (I also see a "Calgary Fire" on the last side door)

Any ideas on what the gold text under the CFD logo is?

I also found some pics of the new CFD unit on SVI face book page. Unfortanly they are poor quality. Look under photos from FDIC 2011.

Here's a walkaround from SVI of CFD's new Rescue. (Is it really the new Heavy? I thought the new Heavy Rescue was supposed to be a dual rear axle)

YouTube - SVI Trucks - Calgary Heavy Rescue
That's what I get for posting before the video is over. This is the new Rescue and not the Heavy Rescue unit as he states there is a second truck identical to this one.

Great looking truck.

I dunno. Did it really need to be fully decked out with warning lights/chevrons/etc and built on a Gladiator?

How much actual seat time driving a real truck are they going to save by having this?

I mean, it looks cool as hell - but I don't know if that should be a requirement for a training vehicle.

That's what I was thinking to Mr. Velvet. Don't get me wrong I LOVE the truck but was it really needed??? I mean it's got 8 seats in it, 2 driver simulators and all the bells and whistles. I think CFD could have just put a driver simulator at the training facility; Then possibly with the money saved, maybe buy another Rosenbauer Engine?

I saw in the news this morning that Engine #11 (E5208) the 75' Pierce Quint was on scene at that house fire in Castleridge.... Does anyone know if the Engine has been stuck in another station??? #32 perhaps??
, Thanks
