CHP El Cajon Office has been using the Gold low-band exclusively for the last few days. The RCS is still patched, but all the units are transmitting on low-band, and even the dispatcher has that patched audio sound. EV20 extenders are active as well.

I would say they are doing it to make sure officers don't forget how to use low-band, but they rotate officers in and out of offices so frequently I don't think that is what is happening.

Techs have been wrapping up the the phasing's issues that pestered the gold for many years.
Did CHP leave RCS?
Did RCS demand CHP encrypt?
Money is tight at CHP and CRIS is stalled due to budget deficits.

Lo band and analog...just like grandpa did.

I noticed this too and was thinking it was conditioning/positioning for CRIS so they don't continue to pay for the RCS, if CRIS is going online here soon. I have no inside knowledge, just speculation. I have notice the new 700/800 Mhz antenna added to the patrol vehicles around the county and in the Bay Area recently (located on the roof, towards the windshield).

The low-band Gold Similcast system was optimized/phased and ready for use back in late spring and early summer 2006. The El Cajon Area Office had no confidence, at least that is what they used as an excuse to not give up the use of the RCS and radio interoperability with the Sheriff so they (local CHP) got the local politicians involved and convinced the CHP Executive Management to keep using RCS. I believe the revenue the County was receiving for the CHP to use RCS was another factor for the County to convince the CHP to stay on RCS.

18 years ogo???
Gold has sounded like LEAD for quite a few years. Phasing was once again an issue.
I was on I-8 on Wednesday afternoon while the state "DC" units ran a final test eastbound out Interstate 8 to the county line.
As a B.E.R.R.T. member, I was in charge of the snacks.

We were spaced apart about 5 miles moving east.
It sounded really good...it still has some dead spots but it will never be perfect. There is still phasing , and there always will be.

So has CHP left RCS?

The state is broke...CRIS is not a priority like it once was now that all state funding is upside down.

EL Cajon CHP is still using the San Diego RCS. I can hear them using it right now without encryption.

CRIS is still supposed to be a long time out for Border Division. Valley only has 2 areas that have switched over and that isn't going great.

The mobiles have apparently moved on two channels (Gold & Black) to CRIS but fortunatley we're still able to hear the dispatcher. It's one thing to cover this metro area with CRIS, but covering this huge state is another matter. I hope they find something truly positive in keeping the general public from hearing what's going on on the highway in front of them.
