Does anyone know where Columbus Police are on the frequency spectrum. Sheriff is on the state trunked system, I see the officers with kenwood radios. Are they on with the sheriff?

They are on the state trunked system, you just gotta find their TGID. Any 700/800 radio can use state trunk systems, it just that kenwood it cheaper that Motorola

I figured as much, but was more curious as they have 800mhz frequencies an addition to the uhf ones as well to the state system. The radios I saw had a uhf/800mhz style whip. But I have seen weird things in other places with police and fire being on ltr systems. But I saw fire talkgroups on the state system so that knocked that question out.

You do have some fire departments out there who still use there analog systems, most of them use it for paging or patch system.

Most of them 700/800 can be conventional simplex frequency, like radio to radio. Most fire departments use that as well if they can’t reach there Tac channel off that Trunking system or they in a building.

In the March, 2nd MSWIN meeting minutes it is noted that Columbus PD issued a procurement request for 67 Motorola APX radios for use on MSWIN. They were approved for all but one of them (APX N70), so if they have disappeared from UHF conventional, they are probably now on MSWIN.

I'm not sure if the N series has been approved by the WCC yet? That would be why.
Yeah that was why. It was interesting to note that they requested 60 APX6000s, and only 6 APX1500s. I guess they will operate primarily with portables only.

I read the minutes as well. They were wanting radios that weren't by MSWIN so they have to switch to something else..
Be safe
Not sure I follow. They were requesting radios not approved by MSWIN? If so, the way I read it is that they were denied (1) APX N70. They were approved to purchase the (60) APX6000s and (6) APX1500s.

They are definitely not on Moswin. Mswin is very weak system atleast in columbus. It barely gets thru the hotel walls. They still have kenwood radios which look like tk3180s which in theory puts them on uhf or 800 or uhf ltr. I had a conversation with a gentlemen who carried a radio who stated they are still encrypted and are looking into other options. He stated they were playing with a new system but they we're not happy with it. I wonder what that was :). He stated they have no compatibility with the sheriff on their current radios other then the dispatch office. He also stated that their were looking into other options, honestly I'm not impressed with mswin and honestly wondering if the tower is weak or its on my end. The system in a local county that supports a local system is by far better with little to no drop on the control channel. Why not dmr or other options here with patches to mswin.

Yeah, still no motorola radios out their. I see the police every night and a Sgt at that. Their still using kenwoods, I have also held on the control channel and see no activity. I hear no activity either which is strange as I know the airports radios are operational. The funny part is the deputy assigned to the airport carries two radios. Their are issues with this system in this area or no patching. The msu area systems work fine in starkville. Send the radio techs get this operational.

So you are hearing no activity on either MSWIN site in Lowndes County, or you can't hear the control channels at all? There should be enough MSWIN users in the area to have a decent amount of activity.

The Columbus site is just north of the city, so it should cover pretty well. If anything, coverage might not be the best on the south or west end of town. The Crawford site probably doesn't cover the city well at all. It's too far south.

MSU is on the Oktibbeha County system, which is a Harris P25 upgrade of the original EDACS system that MSU and Oktibbeha County built out. Being a County owned system, they were able to build the system to provide more in-building coverage in their specific area. They have two sites just outside of Starkville that provide great coverage in town.

I am noticing very weak or poor in building coverage from the four hotels right off the highway and am fighting to get a solid signal. This system by comparison to what I'm used to is really bad for peneration and signal strength.
