Marine radio

Both RCI and NCL specifically asked if my HT's were Marine transceivers. Both times I responded No and they said good because they would have to hold them IN PORT and not allow them aboard.

For the first time ever, I was questioned [day 3 of Cruise] by Security about the Radio in my room. Seems my Scanner Antenna [suction cup mount to ceiling] was observed by my Stateroom attendent and security was told.

Explained it was a Scanner [RX only] and had a nice discussion with the Desk Manager and Security Chief about the Amateur Radio topic and explained that the typical portable VHF/UHF will not interfere with the ship channels, yet the FRS/GMRS that they don't question would.

Now to contact RCCL and push the issue.

cruise ships

Hi Bill, did you have a inside cabin or outside?
I didnt think to take a better antenna on my last cruise.
Only ant i had was the rubber duckie but we had a a port side window.
So now next time I will take my wire dipole with suction to install on window

Balcony. I use the typical Radio Shack over the window-lip mounts with a BNC connector for my Car [this way, I can use a specific antenna for the band I am interested in] So I also have a few for travel [hotel etc] that are Suction Mount with the BNC.

Rubber Duckies work well, but then you are in a modified Faraday Cage

Typically it's not known until the ship sails [from our Scanner hobby] what frequencies she will be using, however I am sure that someone in NYC [where she will home port] will have a report sometime before your Nov-2013 cruise.

Keep checking the ScanMaritime.com web site as we get info monthly from hobbyists who have spent time searching out the Cruise/Maritime info for us.

Updated Carnival Liberty Ship Freq's

Will be traveling on the 2.0 Updated Carnival Liberty Ship in the next couple of weeks and wondered if anyone had recent verified freqs for the ship.

Liberty recently went through what they deem as a 2.0 Ship Upgrade and would assume this meant electronics updates as well.

Checked Bill's list and there were only 2 freqs listed there for the Liberty.

Thanks in Advance to All,

Mike - FL

Yup, sadly those are the only listings provided. :( from 2007

Sounds like you will be doing some searching for the channels.

I even did a ScanPedition to Miami last year and got 25+ ships updated, but sadly the Liberty was not around during my visit [Miami/Lauderdale]

Last info provided by anyone was March 2010 for the 3 Repeater Frequencies. Likely they have not changed, but based on RCI info of the past, there are likely other channels that habe not been shared.

So any new updated freq on the freedom of the seas or port freq out of port canaveral? Thanks

My new wife and I used Motorola I355's on our honeymoon cruise. I had the external antennas on them. We didn't use them much on the ship but they worked fine on shore with no interference from other users. They were not questioned when we came back on board either.

BaoFeng UV-5R Plus

I'm leaving my Uniden scanner behind and bringing two BaoFeng UV-5R Plus HTs which I recently bought from Amazon. These HTs are the hot item with my fellow hams and are selling like hot cakes for very good reasons. I really like listening to the bridge channel right before sailing when they count down the missing passengers. It's nice to be able hear your color group is being called on disembarkation day or as you sit killing time waiting for your excursion group to be called. Sometimes it is interesting to listen to the engineering channel while they fix broken pumps and the like. The ship to shore channel is pretty boring unless you speak Italian, at least on Princess. I plan to use MURS or GMRS onboard for two way comms with the XYL.

Princess

Do you have a cruise on Princess coming up? We're doing one in a few weeks out of Port Everglades.

To all the members here, going on a nice Warm Maritime Vacation Enjoy and do report back what you hear [PL tones are vital]

For the two going out shortly, Post or PM me, where/when and I'll pass back what other Cruise Ships you are likely to encounter.

Cruise Season here in Boston is well over [Early Nov] and won't kick back in until the Bermuda season begins in May. :(
