My dial seems sort of tight. Is there any easy way to make it run easier? It's always been this way as far as I can remember.

it seems "tight" because the tuner knob has more resistance than you would expect. that is caused by the grease in the gears of the fine tuner. remove the grease and see how you like that. if it feels too "loose" then add a little grease.

take off the tuner knob assembly. it's stuck on there pretty good with friction, so use a very small screwdriver to pry up while holding the back of the knob so it goes straight up off the shaft.

remove the slip ring from the tuner knob shaft. that held on the ring gear, which now simply falls out.

the fine tuner consists of a 4:1 planetary gear inside the main tuner knob and doesn't come apart. it's the grease on these gears that give it resistance.

you can't take it apart, so you have to wash the grease out. soapy water won't do it. pour in some vegetable oil and work the gears around to dissolve the grease. then you can use warm soapy water to wash it all out. repeat as necessary.

reassemble, reinstall the tuner knob assembly, and try it out. you might like it, but with no lubrication it might feel lumpy and wear out the gears over the years.

for lubrication, take the ring gear off again and apply a little bit of grease on the gears with something like the end of a paper clip. work the gears to spread it around. you can try heavy grease, light grease, or oil, but different plastics are not compatible with different lubricants, degrading or causing them to become brittle. I don't know what lubricants are good or bad for this plastic. silicon is generally good for almost all plastics so you might try that first.

Sounds like May be best to leave it be? I don't want to cause any issues. The knobs just pop off?

it's an easy fix. once you take grease off you can always put grease back on.

all volume and tuner knobs "pop off", these are stuck on better than most.

if you're too squeamish or too clumsy maybe it's better not to do it.

So the fine tuner just pulls straight off? You make a good point as to what grease is ok. As long as it doesn't cause damage the way it is, maybe best to leave it. It's been a great radio for a long time.

no, it's not damaging it. assuming it's not extra tight because of damage or a stuck roller(s) on the tuner frame assembly.

yes, the tuning knob assembly pulls straight off. but it's stuck on pretty good, you probably can't pull it off with your fingers. you would need a screwdriver. the fine tuning knob does not come off of the rest of the tuning knob assembly.
