Anyone listening to the Dismal Swamp in Suffolk? Its located just north of the Suffolk Airport. Helos are in the air making water drops. I watched them on the way home today (no scanner with me today). I assume Virginia DOF and US Dept of Interior are doing the ops.

Southern Area Incident Management Blue Team is in the process of arriving to Dismal Swamp (per the National Incident Fire website). I did some searching on RR and found posts from the 2008 fire there where CAP carried repeaters on 415.225 and they flew over the area for hours. Also I know in NC the same team was in Dare County and 164.625 was used for water ops.

National (Boise) Interagency Fire Center Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference Here is the link to the Boise National Incident Page

At the Dare County fire the same team used 172.675 with water distribution ops in addition to the 164.625 repeater. The 172.675 repeater also had hourly automated weather statements. Both these repeaters may be fixed on various locations in NC and were being used for the fire, or might be mobile and might be used in Dismal Swamp.

See ya

I did not even know there was a major fire occurring down there until the Washington Post reported today that smoke had drifted north and Ann Arundel County MD Fire responding to 27 different locations investigating outside fires that were attributed to the Dismal Swamp fire. We do not get a lot of Virginia state news up here in Northern Virginia (unfortunately).

You too huh? We don't get much here in Central VA either. This was the first I'd heard of it too, I just came up 460 from Norfolk last Sunday. I had heard more of the Dare Co fire than this, but that one went on for a long time.

I found em....... I drove up to Desert Rd in Dismal Swamp (to the Incident Command Post) and sat right up the road (about 50 yards away). Took a while but they are on 169.785 CSQ (repeater output). This is one of the freqs Southern Area Incident Management Blue Team uses and they are onsite.

There is no common freq so far for Va Forestry and NC Forestry to talk on. I passed a NC Forestry radio tech van on the way to the command post to try to find something in common they could use. He was using 151.205 (NC Forestry) talking to his base in Eliz City talking about that. Hopefully they will work something out. There was a Dominion Power truck on site, several Va Forestry and several NC Forestry trucks also. Va Forestry had what looked like either a 18 wheeler fuel truck or water truck come up (passed me also) to the command post (called a ICP - Incident Command Post). I'll go back Saturday and camp out inthe area (in my truck) and see if they came up with a common freq. They might use Suffolks 800 system (just a guess) as Suffolk is helping and they are on their system. Maybe it might be easier for them to make a new talk group and everyone use it on the scene.

Awesome. I contacted the ICP today and volunteered to help with their comms if they wanted me to this weekend. I hope so, might be fun.
What was on 169.2?
169.785 I have determined is a comand freq. Could it be water ops? Or maybe the actual firefighters? Is it simplex or a repeater?

Thanks for posting

Today on 169.785 one of the command people had some units in the field got to either 171.525 or 171.575 simplex to get off the 169.785 repeater. This was to get someone in the field to be able to talk to one of the helos while they were doing water ops and getting water out of Lake Drummond.

Today on 169.785 another spot fire burned around 4 acres and someone on the radio was trying to see if it was in Virginia or NC to see if they were supposed to put it out. One of federal people told them "who cares, put it out". Geez..... the political problems with having a large fire in multiple states and counties.

This morning when I get getting ready for work I heard 169.785 referred to channel 3. A engine was calling another engine and said he was on channel 3. The other engine did not answer, so I assume they were trying all their channels to find them.
