Eric's tool only downloads 0602902e_U2.0.bin , at least for me. A version that *seems* to be dated 2015 according to the release notes that are downloaded along with it.

So I implore if anyone can PM me with a source for the FW, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks everyone.

The grefwtool ver 0.2.0.3 is working fine and downloads ver 4.5 firmware. You're still doing something wrong. Follow the instructions I wrote them and hundreds have successfully followed them.

Hello,

You need to set the firmware type to WS-1080, otherwise the firmware meant for you scanner is downloaded.

OK, thanks everybody for your help. I was able to get it working properly by changing the order of starting the tool, and then back to wiki instructions - it took several iterations. For some reason, I was unable to get the wrench tool button to function, but during one iteration, the button worked (partially,) allowing me to select the scanners, but not the com port, then on the next attempt, it saw the port. Note that the com port with the proper driver (gre) was always visible in device manager. Weird. Thanks again.

I've found that sometimes you need to reboot your computer after making multiple changes with drivers. I'm glad you got it working! Eric has done an outstanding job with all of this, and I'm sure everyone here really appreciates his labor!!!

Hello,

Whistler changed the obfuscation method for firmware files, so Version 4.5 is the last version that can be used. The tool will download Version 4.6, but will not load it into the scanner. Users that want to try the experiment need to find Version 4.5 of the firmware.

OK Eric, given that, how should the wiki be changed to reflect that new version that shouldn't be used, and at what point do I put the instructions in to load the 4.5 firmware?

Loading WS1080 Firmware to a PRO-668 - The RadioReference Wiki

Perhaps if the 4.5 version of the firmware could be loaded to say, a Dropbox, then the GREFWtool points to that, then this could be used to house known working firmware instead of the newest version...

Here are my current instructions as of 3/18/2017:

The procedure to change firmware....\

The following assumes you already have installed either the pro-668/psr-800/pro-18 drivers, You have sourced firmware ws1080 ver 4.5 (ask someone to send it to you), The GREFWTOOL ver 0.2.0.3 tool downloaded and installed. The latest version of ezscan software for the WS1080 (FREE from whistler) on your computer and you have archived your data and have the ws1080 driver
RadioReference.com - Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference...

1) Start the GREFwTool

2) Take the batteries out of your scanner and unplug it

3) Press and hold the Menu button while inserting the USB cable (one end already plugged into the computer).

4) Once plugged in, let go of the Menu button. Wait for the beep from your computer. It could take up to 30 seconds.

5) In GREFwTool go to Settings and press Rescan. The COM port should be filled in.

5a) Also under settings: For Scanner Type use the pulldown to select the scanner you are using (i.e. Pro-668).

5b) For Firmware use the pulldown to select what you want the scanner to become (WS1080)

DO NOT Download the most current firmware (ver 4.6 won’t install as of this writing)

6) Select the Connect To Scanner icon

7) Select the Update Firmware in Scanner icon in GREFwtool. Then locate and Select firmware ver 4.5. It will install and you should see a percentage of completion bar. The scanner will shut down when done.
Install the ws1080 driver,

8) Go into EZScan (not IScan) do the DSP Update, library updates and/or restore from archive or transfer database if needed. via the cable or card reader

9)Turn your scanner on, if it shows the Whistler logo, loads fine and works, put the batteries in and enjoy the fruit of Eric's work!!!

I download the new grefwtool 0.2.0.3 and I don't see the ver 4.5. Can someone send me the file? Thanks. I have downloaded the whistler ez scan that is updated now.

Hi Eric
The tool from Whistler, zero's out the CPU, then no communication with PSR800/WS1080, then says error-please reboot.
Hello,

Yes, you have to use GREFwTool to update a PSR-800 with WS1080 firmware. CPU Update with EZ-Scan will erase the application in the scanner.

You need to follow the procedure with GREFwTool again to reload the CPU Firmware V4.5 file. If you updated the PSR-800 to V4.5 before, then the file should still be in the tool's directory.

OK the wiki has been updated. I've included links in the preparation stage to point to where you can get the WS1080 driver and EZScan, if you don't have it or have lost it. Thanks Wacky

I'm looking to update my PSR800 with WS1080 revision 4.6. V4.5 works and update just fine.

Exactly.

Guess us PSR-800 will have to wait to see if/when we can update or not.
