• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Does anybody have any radio they can give me to start radios

That's not answering the question. An answer would be "San Antonio police and fire rescue". As an example.

Radio, software, programming cables, learning curve, time and money, breaking laws to access trunking systems....and no knowledge base to fall back on. This is a recipe for disaster.

Get a scanner. Much safer, achieves your goal cheaper, faster, easier, and safer. The RATIONAL choice is obvious.

I'm not shocked by his response. He has been very vague. I want to think he wants help, but seems to me he's trolling. I wouldnt be shocked if a mod locks it down at this point. If the guy wants help, he needs to be more open.

Let him spend his money on a radio and find out,
#1 The system is encrypted, or
#2 The radio ESN(?) isn't programmed into the system and is a paperweight brick.

The system he wants to listen to uses LLA and ASK. Good luck!!!!
Yeah, hi, me again. Neither of those means a thing in the context of setting up passive monitoring with an MSI subscriber (aka "NAS").

Link Layer Authentication simply prevents rogue subscribers from registering on the system, as they won't meet the authentication challenge since they wouldn't have the KEK loaded. Makes no difference for a radio programmed for passive monitoring.

An Advanced System Key, as you surely must be aware of by now, only applies to radios that lack the Software System Key option in the flashcode, and instead require an ASK (physical dongle) to program a trunked system into CPS. The system itself never, ever, sees the ASK or requires an ASK. It's a CPS thing only.

The way you exclaimed "Good luck!!!!" leads me to believe that you thought either of those options would prevent the OP or anyone else from passively monitoring a trunked system. Perhaps you are confusing LLA with LLE (Link Layer Encryption), aka encrypted control channel. That is an exceedingly rare option on P25 systems, so normally doesn't apply to the majority of systems on the air. Heck, even federal systems aren't using that yet.

700-800 and Police and fire
Why am I not at all surprised by this answer.

Man, I will again say what everyone else has been saying. Get a damn scanner. True this is a radio enthusiast group. But your first post wanting to monitor PD and you picking up a 7/800MHZ XTS radio can only spell trouble.

Go on eBay, get an MTS, xts3000 or SOMETHING in UHF, pay to get your GMRS license ( it’s really cheap now and there’s no test ) - and have some fun with that.

But something tells me you have zero interest in doing that.

It's not luxury...yet...but a Unication G4 or G5 will also give you the ability to listen into your local stuff without any risk of transmitting in a much more portable package. That way you can listen both in your crib or out taking your Ferrari (or vic) for a joyride between acting gigs.

can you say "wanna bee" because thats what it sounds like he wants to "play radio" without any knowledge whats required or even if he needs a license to transmit, the next thing he will want is help programming his radio.

by the way i have several boxes of radios you can have, but you will need to pick them up.

Classic whacker. Wants to look cool (his/her words). Wants CopSounds™ blaring from their radio. Cop cosplay. No desire to do anything technical, just pose and be a spectacle.
That seems to be the case. I look like a whacker with my radio strap tho so maybe I have no room to talk lol
