It would be interesting to keep track of times scanner listeners help vs hinder the authorities. In my many years of listening, I have helped catch impaired drivers and burglars. Only a few times have I ever shown up to fire scenes, and never got in the way when I did.

It's neat to immediately recognize the area even though I've been gone so long. That's about 5km from my old house in Brougham, and 1km from the 407.. do the tow guys hang out on the 407 like they do on the other 400 series roads?

And is York EMS routinely sent into Durham? I imagine if they were at M&S or even in Markham proper, it would be a much shorter run than any ambulances stationed anywhere in Pickering, but I'm curious if units cross boundaries much these days.

And that road is definitely a dead-end, about 30 ft north of where the helicopter footage was taken. Whole lotta nowhere further on. :)

I'm not a big listener of Georgan (York) ambulance, but I have a friend that is a paramedic in Sutton, and he would do some coverage in Durham.

Last week I heard Toronto EMS staging for coverage in Georgan's area, so I guess there is some cross-pollination between regions.

I recall 'back in the day' that Chatham Police used to embrace the scanner audience. When I was living in Chatham roughly 6 or 7 years ago on multiple occasions I heard 'to any of our scanner listeners out there if you happen to spot (lost dog, missing elderly person, stolen vehicle etc etc) please give our office a call'. I think it's a great idea to have extra eyes on the street. I don't know about jumping in and trying to detain suspects, but the more eyes the merrier I would think.

Mounties here do that all the time as well. Mainly on the local First Nation, where it is known that approximately 112% of the nation has scanners. RCMP officer after taking a complaint from OCC on the CAD/MWS: "Howard, your horses are loose again on Highway 1A..."

Well that Chatham Police thing went out the window when they switch to their provoice radio system, should have just encripted a ch. or 2 and kept everything else in the clear, so we could help if need to be. I dont mean by going after i just mean by keeping our eyes out for important things.

They have alot of talk groups in their radios. Over 10 of them.. Its not only the 5 talk groups they have for police use, they also have a few for radio techs and some other stuff.
Guess the edacs gave them much wider area of operation since them became CK and having allllll that area to cover.
But they still have the repeaters in the clear:)
