Encryption Changes w/ Migration To Motorola

Hi,

I'm starting to notice that a lot of agencies in Florida are slowly migrating over from Harris radios to Motorolas (portable-wise). I'm not sure whether or not it means they need to create an entire new TRS (not referring to the sites ?), I have no idea how what works.

My question is - with a lot of these agencies migrating over to Motorola, should we expect any changes with the encryption settings on a lot of these systems/talkgroups? Is anything expected to unencrypt anytime soon? Florida is the only state I have seen in the nation that utilizes mass amounts of encryption on a system- do you think there will be any "going-back" (in a sense) from this?

And please positive feedback only as I am here to learn and gather new information from this post, rather than read snarky remarks 🙂

Motorola subscribers work just fine on Harris systems and there is no need to create a "new TRS."

I've only seen a very very small percentage of agencies that have gone encrypted, to later become unencrypted. Look for more to go the opposite direction.

Little benefit would be realized from agencies that are operating encrypted to just undo it at the time of a changeout. If anything more secure modes would be implemented at those times I would think as well.

As others mentioned unfortunately we will see more not less of it especially with agencies moving to hybrid LMR/LTE systems. It is coming, with early adopters using it now as failover in radios like the APX NEXT series and Harris XL, and with LTE networks being virtually unmonitorable things are not likely to improve.

Georgia State Patrol is likely to largely disappear into LTE land, as an example you can read on in the Georgia threads and others will too. WDW is another example. Several once bustling TRS with thousands and thousands of users now all gone and all sucked into the AT&T network.

The heyday of scanning is in the rearview unfortunately.
