When you say handheld, you mean fireground communications? If so, nothing will change and it will stay as is.

Dont know who said it but yes the FDNY will be using UHF for operations I believe they are going to still use the VHF system for initial dispatch and response and operations for Fire and EMS will be on Analog UHF simulcast conventional (there is no "standardized" mixed mode conventional simulcast offered from moto however there are SP configs) ... The trunked system and conventional systems are being built side by side at each site... I believe the trunked system will be mixed mode and will be used for admin uses such as inspections and day to day ops.

The FDNY currently and will still use UHF for operations, fireground, Handie-Talkie, etc. Their dispatch will be going to UHF away from VHF soon. How soon is soon? Probably nobody's guess but I am sure they will have no choice but to simulcast on VHF for a while as they prepare the apparatus in the field with the new radios.

Once the change over is done, there will be no more vhf. Remember we use the MDT, AT/SP and voice alarm for our initial dispatch. Unlike over depts who had this on lowband and when they moved to UHF, kept the lowband for station tones. We won't need the vhf for anything.

Can't believe it's been a year since this topic was made.

Do you know if FDNY has already started reporgramming/installing new radios in engines and trucks?

Not aware of any installs yet. Don't think they will put to radios in the rigs. Would be better to wait and just swap them out

IMO, they wont starting installing them in the rigs until the bases are up and running a simulcast operation. Also, I doubt there's room in the rigs for 2 radios.

So what is a "BC" that gave it to you? This is actually one of my webpages (482 - 488 Mhz Assignments).

As soon as we can confirm the new conventional freqs for FD and EMS, as well as the new DOITT UHF trunked
system, we will be updating the relevant pages on N2NOV.Net as well as here on RadioReference.Com

.

I think FDNY went through this once before. No! When two ffs call the command post at the same time, the signals fight each other to be heard. The chief can hear both ffs calling, he may not understand what they are saying, so he calls to one of them and tells the other to 10-6. That's with analog. Digital on the other hand will only allow the first caller's voice through and the other callers message is lost. Even if that message is a "may-day". Just because its "new" doesn't mean its better.

Likely the receiving radio won't be able to properly decode the mix of transmissions and neither will be understood. Just like analog.
